It's hard for me to make a comparison. I had both growing up. I do however know for a fact that the Genesis version of Aladdin was better and people who say otherwise are fucking retarded.

Chrono Trigger was one I got to play over a decade after it came out. It easily held up to the modern games at the time. I can't think of a game on the Genesis that equals it in the genre. The SNES was definitely the console for RPGs.

How difficult is it to play Japanese Mega Drive games on an American Genesis system? With the SNES I can just cut out the tabs (and I have) but from what I understand there's more to it with the Genesis. I'm also thinking about getting a Sega CD sometime but I don't know about playing Japanese games on that either.

You have to solder switches so not that straightforward although that's only for region protected games, earlier ones are regione free. Also get a passthrough cart, don't cut tour genesis.

Sega CD games look for the BIOS, which you can soft-patch with a flash cart.

SNES has the best platformers, best beat em ups and best shumps though. There is no debate.

Gunstar and Mario are the only good games you listed

Cool. I'll have to look into those. I'm glad the way for Sega CD is easier, I've been interested in checking out the SMT1 port. Also the Japanese version of Popful Mail, while still a bit pricey, is way way cheaper than an American copy.

Snes version had sickass acrobatics, ledge hanging, capcom soundchip and level design that rewarded going fast

it's some hardware feature that allows faster scrolling. apparently a game like sonic where you go really fucking fast through a stage wouldn't have been possible without it, and SNES hardware wasn't capable of it.

Even the creator of Sonic admits the games aren't as good. It's hard to incorporate Sonic's speed into good level design. They did there best but it will never feel quite as good as most Mario games.

Only one of Best Phantasy Star games was even on the Genesis whereas two of the best Final Fantasies were on the SNES. If this was a NES vs Master System thread Phantasy Star would win easily there. It's also misleading as JRPG wise the SNES was king beyond just Final Fantasy.

Debatable, I could go either way depending on the day. Castlevania 4 is a much more fine tuned game but it doesn;t really break the mold otherwise. Bloodlines has a lot more creativity/things you wont see anywhere else in the series but the genesis controller works against the game in some areas. They both missed out the on the definitive best Castlevania of the generation Rondo of Blood.
