Good fucking luck playing battleborn without any way to grind loot.
Free players are going to be running around against people who take 20% less damage from the front or have recharging shields on characters that can't get shields to begin with or 20% extra damage for free and plenty of money to activate super minions and shit. Meanwhile free players are going to be struggling to keep their head above water with their shitty +10% movement speed after killing a minion boots that cost 800 to activate.
