It holds up even to this day.

Are they in Mordor yet?

Latest patch seems to be the Black Gate.

Coming this year apparently, but that was before the dev hand off so who knows where that schedule is at.

Too bad I got bored before Moria.

I got bored with the game after Moria. It was a real slog to get through Eregion, but holy shit Moria was so worth it.

downloaded it once, but it turns out you have to play in order to play as a big guys

Still can't believe they held to their plans to add most areas into the story.

I remember the comfy inn roleplay that would happen. I hated leveling but loved the exploration and just talking to people.

Did they make this game any less greedy?

I remember certain zones were locked, you couldn't send or receive items.

I'm a HUGE lotr nerd, but this was a turn off for me. There were like 4 dungeons that were boring after a while. This coming from a guy who played MUME for 15 years.

The music is great

Amen, brother.

Wasn't there a fatigue/stamina system for this game?

I played from vanilla into moria and started losing interest around mirkwood. Tried to get back into it during isengard but the spark was gone.

One of my favourite MMO's and I still miss the people I met on that game. It had a fantastic community.

Not that I know of, though there is a forum post about someone who recommends it and gets shat on if you google it.

this game really needed a better art team for characters. quests were decent, lore was faithful, music was good, environment was beautiful, but my god the players, creatures, and animation were literal eye rape

Is there some way to force the game to use widescreen resolution?

You have to manually change the aspect ratio in the options menu, just found it myself.

Yeah, not the best. It has that "generic mmo style" that every game from 2002 to 2010 had.

Is the combat any more engaging than it was in early vanilla? I dug the setting and exploration angle, but the combat put me off.

Some classes are more reactive than others, but it's still pretty much the same, at least from what I know.

Damn shame. Maybe I'll jump back in at some point for old time sake. So much coming out soon though.

>So much coming out soon though.
Like?

I fucking loved the dread/hope system. The first time I ran into Witch King and my character cowered in fear as the minimap turned into the eye of Sauron I got seriously spooked. Every other time that happened, I knew shit was getting real. Seeing dread/hope modifiers pop up was also great at setting the mood in some places.

>decide to swim in the huge lake outside Moria where the Watcher is
>dread goes up to the "you feel like some really bad shit is around" level, all the colors start fading out and my stats plummet
>nothing actually happens

Yeah. I always get a huge hankering for Lord of the Rings this time of year so I installed the game and am already feeling super comfy, running around exploring.

playing music was fun and i wish more mmos let you do that

The environment design really is something else, especially for an MMO. The first time I went into Angmar, I almost couldn't believe how shitty that place was. The towns/camps were hidden away in remote corners, the land was either blackened desolation or poisoned swamp, and black spires shot out from over mountain ranges. It did such a good job of making you feel truly alone and in danger. And holy hell, it is a gigantic area.

Then there's Carn Dum, and the instances inside it. The whole place is horrifying and gorgeous at the same time. I sort of wish there were flying mounts, so I could get up and have a really good look at the whole thing.

Was very well made wow clone with plenty of geat ideas
Normal sized bear being raid boss was kinda cool too
Dropped around moria release and stopped caring after it go f2p
Would pay sub to play on the legacy servers

Í'm glad people here think so fondly of this game still.

LITERALLY NO EXCUSE FOR EVERY MMO TO HAVE LOTRO'S MUSIC SYSTEM

Really great overall but I wish it wasn't so easy.At least up to level 20 or so the combat felt so simple and I could easily solo enemies out of my tier. A non-PVP-centric option to play as Orcs and Eastern dudes would be nice too.

>tfw the new trait system came out and Minstrel DPS literally tripled

bump

Anyone currently playing? I started a Guardian and was wondering if anyone knows if their "Red" trait tree is an actual DPS or just a tank that's got more damage moves than the other trees.

guardian 2hander DPS is good, they're very good soloers

Red is the bleed tree, right? It's respectable DPS in groups, and when you're solo you can take on damn near anything. I'm pretty sure you can get away with going red for the entire game, unless you're gonna tank in endgame raids I guess.

>I'm pretty sure you can get away with going red for the entire game

Perfect, that's what I was hoping, since I assumed that it was a more DPS-y build and since they have so much armour and stuff I should be good to go. Fantastic.

From a Tolkien view, its very nice. The towns, the common folk, the music (holy crap the music is nice af). That and the originality in classes still holds to mmos today. Wardens, captains, minstrils, runekeepers, even burglars in the sense that they are a melee support rather than a typical one shot assassin.
The combat is a bit dry, like a slower wow paced combat style. Definitely the one mmo that will make you feel comfy and part of a universe that isn't ours.
However, I just cant recommend it to people. I know graphics don't make or break a game (usually), but the graphics are very very dated. And no matter what computer you have, you WILL have frame rate drops constantly. And it just suffers way too heavily on the pay to play method. You have to buy areas/quests/stories/traits/bigger wallet/etc. It just punishes you too heavily for not spending a lot of money. Overall I would say, though it does sadden me, Lotro is struggling to keep up with today's time.

Is it still possible to get all the paid shit by farming in game shit?

I'm looking for a good time sinker to forget that tomorrow is my bd.

You could used to buy everything using in game currency

does anyone know where the cheapest helms deep keys are?

It's still possible if you farm Deeds and whatnot, but it's pretty difficult.

Happy birthday in advance, user!

How to farm deeds.

There's a Deed Log or something along those lines showing you the deeds you can do, there's probably guides online on the most effective routes and whatnot aswell.

The comfyness definitely holds up. Here's Rivendell from when I rode there a while back.

Man, I love the entire flavor of the Captain class. Playing as a frontline fighter who heals his allies by being an inspiring presence is such a cool concept. Uruk Warleader being essentially the "evil" Captain was also pretty fun, with healing skills like "Crack the whip" and "coarse language".

like it matters, literally just buy 1 month of VIP and you'll get all the areas and once you get to moria you're good, also i never specifically farmed deeds and i still was getting loads of turbine points to spend in the shop

also getting vip permanently unlocks virtue / class spec slots even when you go back to being premium

Yeah the "health bar" of the game being morale lent itself to some nice flavor to the mechanics, like rallying warcries bringing people's morale up, allowing them to fight longer. Also made sense as to why minstrels were so good at raising ally morale and lowering enemy morale.
Also burglars being as much of a support class as an MMO stealth DPS was great.
