How will Mario Odyssey be judged compared to SM64, Sunshine, and Galaxy?

How will Mario Odyssey be judged compared to SM64, Sunshine, and Galaxy?

I'm saying probably SM64 > Galaxy > Odyssey > Sunshine

I don't know about others but I see me liking it in this order
64 > Odyssey > Sunshine > Galaxy 1+2

The popular opinion will probably be what you said though, 64 is a classic and Galaxy 1+2 were beloved as nearly perfect games when they came out.

i agree with this order. i only got a few levels into galaxy before dropping it because of how linear it is. didnt feel right to me. its possible odyssey could be better than 64, but given the current state of gaming its incredibly doubtful

I'm predicting

Galaxies > 64 > Odyssey > Sunshine

on my end. Even Sunshine is a solid game though so that's hardly a damning designation.

We barely even know anything about Odyssey, it's stupid to try to force expectations already.

Odyssey will probably suffer from too much focus on gameplay and fall in the trap of making a shitty or non-existent world for the sake of gameplay. I don't have high hopes for the game. And I hate the concept of going to our world, why couldn't it just be in the Mario world.

>Mario
>too much focus on gameplay

wew

It's not our world it's like a generic NY world. Unless you live in candy land then yeah it's your world

As long as it is better than 3D World, then I'm fine with it. And that's coming from someone who loved that game, but I think it wouldnt be really hard to top it.

For me, I expect it to be like this:
Galaxy 2 > Galaxy 1 > Sunshine > Odissey > 64 (I had a SM64 cart since the day I got my N64 but never finished it, sorry lads I was too addicted to Mario Kart and Pokemon Stadium)

...

Personally, I expect 64 > Odyssey > Galaxy 2 > Galaxy 1 > Sunshine. I wouldn't complain if Odyssey somehow came out on top, though.

odyssey > 64 > galaxy > sunshine

i can dream

>64
>Good by today's standards
>Better than the rest of the Mario series
>Better than the average 3D platformer that came out after it
I want this shitty opinion to end. It's more of a blueprint than a video game.

I don't understand how people like sunshine, not even meme'ing as I felt sunshine was ass

>make the perfect blueprint for 3D platforming games
>proceed to never look at said blueprint again and make things more and more linear

People remember how good the controls and movement were, as well as the few decent missions, and ignore the uninteresting level design, blatant padding, and other shit.

This.

Why is everyone comparing 64, Sunshine, and Odyssey with Galaxy? Galaxy was listed in a different category, alongside 3D Land and World.

>saying this in a thread about an upcoming game that has gone back to said blueprint

Galaxy is the transitional phase between the 2 styles really

Odyssey > 3D World > 64 > Galaxies > Sunshine

Galaxy is something of a bridge between the two divides. I would say it's closer to the 64 style than the 3D style but it's certainly somewhere between them.

Yes and I'm very excited. I want to say 2002 was 15 years ago. Very glad Nintendo is back to making sandboxes to jump around in rather than a course with a defined idea that lasts 4minutes

Nobody knows, game isn't out yet and we haven't seen enough gameplay. It looks fantastic so far though, I'm glad they're going back to the sandbox style of 64 and Sunshine. 3D World, while good for what it was, was far too linear in its level design and its movement for my tastes.

my nigga, 3DW is underrated as fuck

It's too early to say but I could see it being better than both 64 and Sunshine. Nintendo were still figuring out 3D with Mario 64 and Sunshine had a rushed development to save the failing Gamecube.

Galaxy 2 > Sunshine > S64/Galaxy

Yeah it's definitely not a clear cut divide.

I enjoyed it since the movement was like 64, the worlds were open and the tropical theme was pretty nice, I'm surprised they actually had the levels as different as they were for everything being summer-themed. It has it's annoying moments like the Pachinko level, watermelon festival and getting Yoshi to an island for 1 level but it never really ruined the experience for me, every game has it's sour moments after all. I sure as hell like it over Galaxy, I mean those games are great still but I didn't like how Mario controlled in it since he felt slow & a bit boring and the levels were pretty fucking linear. Not going to lie, I didn't even know how people disliked Sunshine until this year beyond the cutscenes, I was a bit surprised.

I mean, I'll give you the health bar system and the hub. But in terms of the moment to moment gameplay and the design of the levels, it's definitely a course clear game. In some ways I would say Sunshine is a bit of hybrid, since even though it has an open world, you can only go for a specific Sprite at a time.

3DW isn't the shit game this board claims it to be, but better than BOTH Galaxy's?

Galaxy was transitional. It was very linear, but still had some of the classic 3D Mario things, like optional levels and worlds. It also had some open areas. Not a lot, but once in a while it was open. I really liked the silver star star of Seaslide Galaxy, and you also had two options avaible the whole time for what star to collect. And Honeyhive purple coins drove me mad, but it did feel like an old school 3D Mario star. And there was some sort of hub world.

Sunshine > Odyssey > 64 > Galaxy 2 > Galaxy

Its my favorite one so far. 64 is great of course but feels a bit dated in places, and some of the platforming is kind of dull. Galaxies have way too much wagglan for my tastes, and like half the time is spent watching Mario fly around.
And Sunshine is just a mess.
I love 3D World's controls, they're so smooth and the platforming is actually well designed.

Is it possible to play Galaxy emulated?

I have a Wii U but I want to play it off my pc

>since even though it has an open world, you can only go for a specific Sprite at a time.
have you never played SM64 or something? as the same can be said of the stars in that game.

Yeah. 3D world is basically Galaxy but without the garbage control scheme. It doesn't have the "in space" window dressing, but who cares.

I agree with everything but the controls, 3DW's locked camera is annoying at times and the lack of triple-jump and other moves saddens me

The game is beautiful on the Dolphin emulator.

Galaxy revisits and remixes core stages based on the objective in putsuit in a similar fashion to the early games. The 3D games are much closer to the likes of SMB3/World than any of the 3D games that predate it, those are much more like 2D Mario but in 3D than what 64/Sunshine were doing. Galaxy is in the same vein as those as well but with a more linear focus on level design and streamlined movement mechanics, foreshadowing the 3D entries moreso than actually being them.

how does it work without the wii remote?

i have a gamecube remote

>as the same can be said of the stars in that game.
64 is pretty wishy-washy on that, there are parts of the missions that have to be done in order, such as defeating the Whomp King so that the tower appears, but there's nothing stopping you from doing the red coin mission before the blast away the wall one.

Only a few of them. For the most part, you can choose between most of the stars even after you have entered the level. Even if your mission is to defeat the Bob Omb, you can still choose to free the Chain Chomp instead.

This, while Galaxy's controls being slowed down was a bit annoying to me, it wasn't until 3D Land/World made them even more stiff that I felt like it was an actual problem.

I thought the gravity fuckery in Galaxy was fun and if we're going to directly compare it to the 3D games then I actually miss it. A minor touch but a creative one nonetheless.

The immediate reception will be that it's the greatest 3D Mario yet. However, as the hardcore delve deep into the mechanics, they'll come to the conclusion that while it is a good game it's not as deep as 64 or Sunshine.

64 > Super Mario Star Road > Sunshine > Odysee > Galaxy 2 > Galaxy 1

>Super Mario Star Road
Get this romhack shit out of here.

3D Mario Games directed by Miyamoto
>SM64

3D Mario Games directed by Koizumi
>Sunshine
>Galaxy
>Galaxy 2
>Super 3D World
>Odyssey

Good 3d Mario Games:
>SM64

Bad 3d Mario Games:
>Sunshine
>Galaxy
>Galaxy 2
>Super 3D World

keep expectations extremely low.

works fine, you just might have to google some control schemes, basically where/how to best map wagglan and shit. but is a gamecube controller even possible to use on a computer?

Man what a trash opinion

its great

yeah but you can only get 1 star at a time since you get kicked out of the level each time you obtain one (a feature that I always found extremely irritating)
64 isn't deep, just glitchy so people like half-A-press guy abuse that, Sunshine is hardly deep either, does it even have an active speedrunning community?
gr8 b8 m8

yeah just buy the wii u converter for gamecube remotes for smash, it turns it into a usb

>Putting Galaxy in the same line as SM64 and Sunshine.

Fuck Galaxy.

The only way I can see this opinion having any merit is to pretty much completely dismiss the relevance of good level design in favor of raw mechanics. 64 plays like a dream but most of the games after it have better levels seeing as most of 64 is structured like a glorified playground rather than an honest platformer.

>in 64 a lot of the level design is ass and the power ups are limited
>Sunshine has bullshit missions and shitty yoshi mechanics, and feels like it needed to be in the oven longer.
>Galaxy feels really restrictive even compared to 2D marios. 64's power-up bullshit is back.
I like all of these games, but I feel like Odyssey has a good shot at being my favorite if it plays its cards right.

People who like sunshine prioritize good movement over good level design. The former can more than make up for lackluster level design. I'd say the latter cannot truly make up for lacking the former.

>The former can more than make up for lackluster level design.
I disagree with that statement entirely, if the levels suck then it doesn't matter if you have the best movement in all of vidya

I'd argue the opposite, hence why Galaxy 2 is my favorite. Dicking around with FLUDD in Sunshine is fun for an hour, but the levels themselves being boring made me lose interest fast, while I'm still going back to some of my favorite Galaxy levels.

The latter can make up for the former. That's basically how Galaxyfaggotry works. While the levels aren't often very open they function well on a pure platforming level, at their best they are like the FLUDD-less levels from Sunshine but more frequent and with gravity shenanigans. The movement mechanics definitely suffered though. Still, if you can favor stage gimmicks over exploration and movement, Galaxy stands out.

How the fuck is Odyssey better than sunshine? Sunshine not casual enough for ya?

galaxy>Sunshine>Odyssey>SM64 - the only correct answer.

64=sunshine>Odyssey>Galaxies
I'm being pretty hopeful for Odyssey

nothing will beat 64 because they didn't care about the boundaries of 3D, in fact they wanted no boundaries. Each 3D mario after 64 got more and more restricted in terms of exploration, physics, and went from open, to almost completely linear (galaxy 2). Nintendo knows how to make a squeaky clean 3D game now, and as a result none of them will be as explored as 64. This being said, Sunshine is still my favorite.

I find 3D world to be more consistent, its worst parts are way better than the Galaxies' worst parts but it's best parts never reach the Galaxies' best.
I think most people tend to forget about the boing parts of the Galaxies, overall I do think 3D World is better.

This is a predictive list, none of us have actually played Odyssey. That said, Sunshine is very much a min-maxed experience with high highs and low lows. Movement has never been tighter than in that game but level/mission design is extremely inconsistent in quality - some top tier ideas but also some of the worst/most tedious moments to grace 3D Mario as a whole. Sunshine has its appeal but of the lot it's probably the most flawed.

>All this nostalgia for 64
>Everyone just ignoring 3D World

>saying everyone is ignoring 3D World
>when it's been mentioned 10x as much 3D Land
Granted it's superior to 3D Land in pretty much every way, but still.

Everyone is treating Land/World (yeah, no one's even acknowledging Land) as entities too different to accurately judge amongst this set of games.

3D World isn't bad like some say but personally I found it pretty boring compared to 64, it was better than 3D Land at least. That being said 64 & 3D World are really different games, it's hard to compare them in a fair way.

>fuck galaxy

this.
I liked galaxy but, its no where near as good as 64 and sunshine

>tfw your game is so good it's put in a category of its own.

hi guys xD I wanna seem cool so here's my list of top mario games

64>Sunshine>Galaxy 1>Galaxy 2>Odyssey

see how i like the older ones more than the newer ones? cuz old = better right? xDD

I always preferred the Nintendo games that stuck out. SMB2 (technically Doki Doki Panic, but whatever), Yoshi's Island, Majora's Mask, and Super Mario Sunshine. Like it or hate the Fludd stuff, Sunshine's level design was a natural progression from 64.

Galaxy 1 and 2 on the other hand had this unsettling vibe for me. Sunshine established this largely connect world and Galaxy just had weird planetoids where somehow living creatures thrived.

>preferred Nintendo games that stuck out
>doesn't like Galaxy because it sticks out, as opposed Sunshine which was a natural continuation of 64

ill never understand why people hate sunshine so much

Sunshine is absolute dogshit though.

Sunshine is the worst 3D Mario game made and it's still one of my favorite games.

I'm sure it'll be fantastic anyway.

Some of the worst levels in 3D Mario, a full third of the Shines are from red/blue coin collecting, and other retarded shit like the story/voice acting.

people will take one look at "New Donk City" and think its a joke. but it will get the Nintendo bonus from reviewers anyway

>Odyssey will probably suffer from too much focus on gameplay

Who has that "Dumbest shit ever posted on Sup Forums" image?

[verb] [adverb] [noun] [conjunction] [noun/plural] [verb] [game title] [idoms]

Its been throughly explained. Really weak level design.

I still think its a good game, but it just doesn't compare to the other 3D marios. I'd include 3D World in that statement.

Did Nintendo seriously make this statement.

Like the hardcore always knew that 64 and Sunshine were different from the following games, but I wouldn't think Nintendo would actually admit it.

For the record I like the whole series, but 64 and Sunshine are about exploring environments where Galaxy and beyond are just platformers.

>the hardcore always knew that 64 and Sunshine were different from the following games
>noticing major changes in level/game design makes you """hardcore"""

>top list: 3d mario games
>bottom list: not mario games

As opposed to the casual gamer, yes

>galaxy
>better than anything

64=Odyssey>Sunshine

Should be much better than galaxy, if it's as open as it looks

It can't beat 64 tho, because the controls still look like ass

3dworld is just a poor man's 3dland where all the platforms are too big so as to accommodate 4 players

The controls look better than Galaxy at least, plus we got the rolling move.

It also had way more creative levels.

>controls look like ass

>look

What did he mean by this?

>nintendo makes a 3d sonic
didnt see this coming.

D E E P E S T L O R E

Well, sincee i havent played, i guessing how they are by.the trailer

Now I just noticed that the way he jumps off the Umbrella is very Sonic like too.

Be cool as hell if they added Sonic as a playable character, you know just for fun.

>Should be much better than galaxy, if it's as open as it looks.

I prefer Galaxy's linear, focused design so I won't say it's worrying for me, I can still do more open 3D Mario, but I'm not expecting this to be better than the Galaxy games.

...
