Is there a single game that doesn't do this?
Sci fi game

Do you have any idea how difficult / pointless it would be to convey such a thing? Unless it was a first contact situation then the game would have to lore dump you SO MUCH info on the species
It's not necessary.
Intelligent non hostiles will show you they are disarmed and try to communicate.
Intelligent hostiles will point things at you.
Unintelligent non hostiles will run or ignore you completely.
Unintelligent hostiles will attack immediately.
>Sci-fi game
The humans decimate the aliens so badly that you hold off on attacks to see if the aliens will at least recover, they never do.
>sci fi game
>every race doesn't have their own Daniel Jackson to keep the peace
Trying to learn an alien language would be so complex as to warrant being a game all by itself
You really can't overthink these things. Suspension of disbelief, etc etc
>inteligent species can't develop and evolve overall the same way
woah
>Aliens walk on two legs and have two arms and one head and two eyes and two nostrils and one mouth and walk just like us and communicate with language and hand gestures just like us and perceive light just like us
An entire universe of infinite possibilities and this is the shit we always get.
It's kinda weird to think that animals IRL do the same. Like, you can tell this cat is pissed off just by looking at it's face.
Why isn't this a proper vidyagame plot?
What would we even do if some aliens came down to greet us? Could you even move without accidentally making some sign of war?
>sci-fi game
>there are aliens
lol, brainlets actually believe aliens are real
>Its an "Autist spergs out over aliens being human-like despite that being a staple of the genre for decades" episode.
Not attacking is a pretty good way to indicate that you don't want to fight.
realism isnt always best
>Aliens come down
>Instead of going to world leaders they go to you
>Rando user on the streets
nah, first reaction is to attack and kill if possible. Those aliens can be up to nothing but fucking trouble.
Animals that have been domesticated by humans have the most recognizable facial expressions... Woah
mass effect tried one species like this
>Scifi/fantasy game
>Animal humanoid with a beak/fangs/snake tongue talks and make same noise as a normal human mouth
Most animals bare their teeth to show aggression, but humans do it to show happiness.
Star Control
Perceive something outside of human perception. Nigga you full retard.
>implying there aren't hyper violent spartan aliens who do a friendly spar to introduce themselves
>sci-fi game
>takes place in space
who unironically believes in space in 2017?
You do know that there are spectrums of light that we physically can't see, but we still know exist?
You do realize that humans only perceive a small fraction of the light around us, right? He does make a valid point.
Modern science suggests the humanoid skeleton is the natural evolution for intelligent life on any planet with reasonable levels of gravity.
we do it different ways for each, because we have lips
Based on a whopping sample size of 1 species, I don't think that's a very good assumption.
Granted for most alien races in the game they do in fact do that, but Mass effect also has th BIG STUPID JELLYFISH
That man barely has lips. They look like they've been sanded down.
With all the different skeletons out there, on our I think that kinda proves the assumption.
>believing in something you've never seen proven
i bet you believe in man-made climate change too
They're also the Elcor. Yes they speak english, but they don't really have any expressions, they're pretty poker-faced
Universal translators, fool
...
Are you retarded or pretending to be retarded?
>aliens use the same facial expressions as humans to express the same emotions as humans
>Is there a single game that doesn't do this?
Andromeda
except this assumes a carbon-based lifeform and a vertebrate, ignores mollusks or anything with an exoskeleton vs an endoskeleton
Easy there buckaroo, this ain't a console war thread. No reason to move the goalposts
>earth skeletons
in the dirt or mud or however you can, draw a right triangle, put the and four dots on the side, and 5 dots on the hypotenuse, any life worth talking to will understand.
>tfw literally every single thing Mass Effect does that people hate is done properly (or not at all as the case may be) in SC2 and many of SC2's races got shitty Mass Effect ripoffs including the whole story more or less being Star Control 3 but somehow worse
>tfw when the new Star Control game is finally released it will probably be treated as if it's the ripoff of Mass Effect
This is the answer to all the bullshit questions. You got horrible caterpillar things, molluscs, sapient plants, lump people, and talking gas bags in one nice package.
I want some weird aliens with incomprehensible limbs and countless sensory organs that perceive frequencies of light and sound that we can't even imagine
...
What the fuck is that even supposed to mean?
>new Star Control game
Hold the phone, what?
The elcor in Mass Effect don't do facial expressions so when they talk to other species they just state the appropriate mood or tone before a sentence.
you forgot the extradimensional civilization-devouring cosmic horror that is so massive, malevolent, and incomprehensible that our human minds can only interpret them as funny-talking gay parrotfish who like parties
Triangles are unusually awesome
Stardock (who made Sins of a Solar Empire) is working on it, it's apparently a prequel reboot.
It's the Pythagorean theorem. He meant to say "put THREE and four dots on the side, and 5 dots on the hypotenuse"
3^2 + 4^2 = 5^2
And here is the problem with discussing things. Alien magic always exists in the minds of these people
>FTL does not exist
>HAHA YEAH BUT WITH ALIEN MAGIC THAT CAN TURN AIR INTO PANCAKES SO ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE
>Thats impossible and heres why
>PFTT YEAH REMEMBER WHEN THEY SAID LANDING ON THE MOON WAS IMPOSSIBLE!?
It's like arguing with a theist.
Isn't that common as a gag thing?
Something like "this means X in my culture"
Yeah they're (actually it's since all of them are just *fingers* of one being) my favorite.
Learn basic geometry, dangus.
Oh, okay that actually makes sense.
How about you write your shit out correctly next time.
I didn't write it out. It was just obvious that the guy made a typo while talking about 3-4-5 triangles.
the idea that an alien civilization can be more akin to octopi (who are already extremely intelligent) than apes isn't really all that far fetched. Insectoid lifeforms however aren't particularly likely to become sapient due to lack of a proper brain.
I'm glad I am not the only autist that notices how stupid this guys face looks when people are talking to him.
>Insectoid lifeforms however aren't particularly likely to become sapient due to lack of a proper brain.
Unless they're like ants
ants and bees have only rudimentary intelligence, they don't really have the capacity for tool-making or complex cognition even if you were to treat the entire colony as a single lifeform. Hell, ants get confused by simply moving landmarks around.
It's literally all anyone notices about him. His job is pretty much just to sit there and make that face while some bottom of the barrel lefty talks.
Would've loved to see some ship melee. Oh well, I'm looking forward to it.
The thing that bothers me the most about most sci-do is treating a whole alien race as a monolithic cultural block without any sort of subdivisions or nuance. This also goes with fantasy, especially when each race has its own neat little nation.
yeah I don't really do strategy games so I don't know much about Stardock but that looks promising
Are you implying all right triangles are 3-4-5?
If you were to draw just any right triangle and assign it 3-4-5 without it actually being one, it might send the wrong message. And I'm not sure what such rudimentary ratios would send as a message anyway. That we're simpletons?
Mass effect had these aliens where they could only show their emotions via pharamones.
>scifi
>cant commit genocide against xeno scum
Why?
>Humans come in varying colors, shapes, and sizes with plenty of variatings in things like eye, skin, and hair color as well as general body features
>people of alien race are mostly indistinguishable save for clothing
It's because they're supposed to be analogous to divisions among different human groups. Which themselves are stereotyped into larger subgroups for simplicity sake, because it's a fucking video game and no one wants to read about the goddamn intricacies of group behavior beyond an 8th grade level.
>Game about the super future.
>You meet lots of alien species.
>They're all space elves.
>Except one that's lizard men.
At least there's a cool robot dude who's really fun to fight as.
A lot of games allow you this though. Even Mass Effect allows you to genocide multiple different species.
>posting a fucking conservative talk show host
jesus christ what happened to Sup Forums? remember when we'd used to post actual funny talk show hosts that deserved it, like John Stewart or Colbert? now it's this fucking dope.
...
WE ARE THE MARTIANS THE BUTT-UGLY MARTIANS
any time you have a triangle where the sides are a multiple of 3, 4, and 5 respectively, it will always be a right triangle. 9, 12, 15 is also a right, for instance.
It's a good way of getting a proper hypotenuse without any intricate measuring tools (i.e. you want to make a cut into a piece of wood)
>John Stewart or Colbert
user pls
hell yeah my dude, I thought I was the only one who played as Bacchus. Played that game back in like middle school or some shit and to this day catgirls trigger me beyond belief
I know it's not the same thing, but I loved in Ideon when the earth crew tried to feint a surrender against aliens with a white flag it enraged the attacking aliens because in their society a white flag is the symbol of death, and orange symbolizes peace.
The instructions were "draw a right angled triangle and label the sides 3-4-5"
I wouldn't label any right triangle 3-4-5 unless I knew it was one
are there any games where aliens are just dumb negroids who don't actually understand FTL and the like and just luckily mash the proper buttons on technology created by some other aliens?
>Good aliens are all humanoids with minor differences
>Bad aliens are bugs and lizards
yeah that guy is stupid but the 3-4-5 rule isn't
I don't think so but there is a movie based on that premise and it's District 9.
>Jon Stewart or Colbert
>funny
most games with some kind of "precursor" race have something like that. Hell, I'm pretty sure Mass Effect's stupid jump things are a result of that
Orks in Warhammer 40k are retards with latent psychic abilities that make it so that anything they believe to be true becomes real. This includes using shrines made of teeth to ward off demons while passing through the Warp, all of their technology and weaponry being actual trash held together with rivets yet still working when they use it, and painting things different colors actually affecting how they work.
nier: automata
(they're already dead)
I wouldn't count Orks in that sense since while they are dumb gitz they do make all their own shit
>what is convergent evolution
Different human societies which evolved in isolation all share the same facial expressions.
>cucker tarlson
LOL
Is that Todd Howard when he was younger?
>Final area is some sort of cosmic space horror in the shape and size of a planet that annihilates entire fleets of battle ships and spawns infinite death ships of it's own and all the creatures on it are eldritch abominations.
The last arc of SO4 was straight up written by someone else entirely, there's no way it isn't.
>aliens show no human like characteristics
>why would you care about an abomination
...
Guess you haven't played No Man's Sky ',:^)
>modern science
Nigger we can only see in RGB when mantis shrimp can see 7 different colors.
>there are some expressions recognized innately by members of the same species (which has only been diverging for ~200,000 years)
>so obviously convergent evolution means all intelligent life will evolve to use the same facial expressions
