One of the most disheartening things about online play are how truly horrible most people are.
Nobody in Overwatch, particularly, wants to take the time to be nice to someone, show them how to play a character, give them advice, tell them what not to do, etc. People just want to be dicks, passive-aggressive, and any other assortment of nasty adjectives.

There's no point in being nice in Overwatch. If you are playing competitive and are playing like shit or making poor hero choices then you deserve everything you get.
All it takes is an hour in quickplay with any hero of your choice to learn to play them sufficiently. It's not really a meme when people say overwatch is a REALLY simple game. I've been playing competitive matches (Diamond MMR) and everyone's been pretty nice so far. I even messed up severely, but our team still kept a positive attitude and won the match in the end.

Honestly, the nature of the genre encourages it. You're thrown into a game with 5 faceless strangers and then expected to work as a unit. The feeling of powerlessness when you perceive a teammate to be under-performing can be very frustrating. Theoretically, putting the blame on your team should protect your own ego and allow you to continue playing at your best. In practice, of course, this is never the case. Basically, if you are not in the specific frame of mind where you are willing to recognize your failings but not let them overwhelm you and play to win while also accepting that sometimes this will be impossible- it can become very easy to lose your composure.

"matchmaking" encourages being a cunt because you're not joining a community when you play, you're just jumping into a set match with other people, and will then leave when the match is over.
As a result, there is no need or desire to be on good terms with the people there because you'll never see them again and the focus is on winning, not playing.
