Magic: The Gathering is becoming an MMO

>"Cryptic Studios and Perfect World, two companies with plenty of experience making online worlds, are creating a Magic: The Gathering massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG or just MMO)."

>"Wizards of the Coast, which owns the popular card game franchise, announced the project today. It is promising a triple-A game, although it did not offer many details other than that it is coming out for unspecified consoles and PC. Wizards of the Coast said it will reveal more details and the game’s title at a future date."

>"Magic: The Gathering the card game has more than 20 million players. It has its own lore that has developed over its 24 year history featuring Planeswalkers, characters that can travel between different worlds and dimensions. While we’ve seen Magic games before, most of them have been digital versions of the card game like the Duels of the Planeswalkers series and Magic Duels, a free-to-play game available for Xbox One, PC, and iOS"

Kind of hyped here, boys. How about you, Sup Forums?

Makes sense with the world, but man can we get like a really good MTG game?

So is it going to be a TCG like HS or a "regular" MMO set on the same universe?

Hopefully it will be good. I wanna walk around as a guy and collect a deck and not be part of my deck.

It will take years to develop, though, no?

Will you be a wizard playing a cardgame magical battle in an mmorpg setting? If so, I am interested, if not, then I don't give a fuck.

It has potential. Lord knows there is more than enough lore to build around. The magic system could be interesting if you have to specialize around one or more colors of mana.

I don't have a clue how it will look like. Ahhhhhh.

Dat 50 man raid on the sliver hive though.

>The MMO is actually just the TCG
>As in you are running around as a guy or "girl" playing people at cardshops
>You have to pay for packs like IRL
>Its more expensive than getting a pack IRL

It will be released at least in 2019, no reason to get hyped

The world boss Emrakrul that takes half the server to kill.

Oh shit the raids could be fucking awesome.

or 15 squirrels...

>The MMO is actually just the TCG
>As in you are running around as a guy or "girl" playing people at cardshops
Yes, please.

>Cryptic Studios and Perfect World

Enjoy spending real world bucks for packs that cost double the price than normal.

I would still play it thou

There will be no raids. Unless you mean 30 vs 1 card battles.
Because I expect a MTG MMO will mean all combat is done via Card Battles.

No, 15,- a month.

>Because I expect a MTG MMO will mean all combat is done via Card Battles.
I would be fucking mad if that wasn't the case and they just take lore creatures for an WoW clone.

It's only weakness!!!!

Yeah I think everyone expects it will be card battles.

Just 30 vs 1 would be hectic but also epic.

>Cryptic

It's doomed.

>Cryptic Studios and Perfect World

Oh boy. Can't wait for Pay2NotBlowYourBrainsOut to be featured again. Cryptic can deliver on content as long as license holder is breathing down their neck to make it so, but Perfect World's business model is dogshit.

Yes that is what I mean.

Still gotta buy the packs.

I'll need more info before i form an opinion on it.
How would classes work?
1 class for every mana colour?

I don't have a clue. I wanna see some videos right now to see what they are going for.

...

>MTG game
>WotC not breathing down their neck

>perfect world

Goddamnit come onnnnn

>It is promising a triple-A game

Because that Neverwinter MMO was super high quality

Not necessarily. MMORPG where cards play a prominent role in combat has existed. With backing of a strong IP like MtG it can work again.

I heard it was becoming an RPG, which sounded weird but exciting.

However...

>MMO

pass

This was a good game.

mtggoldfish.com/articles/magic-the-gathering-mmorpg-from-the-developers-of-neverwinter-mmo

>By the devs of neverwinter mmo

I mean, it wasn't too bad but it wasn't good either, also p2w.

>MtG game
>its an MMO
It's like I live in a universe tailor made to fuck with me.

It was terrible, what are you smoking?

I never really got the p2w part, at least when I played, because literally all of the content until the endgame/pvp could easily be done solo or with uncoordinated randos

But nobody wants that, everyone wants it to be like in yugi, you have your own char and you can go around the world(s) and meet other players to fight on the spot through your planeswalkers playing a game of MTG, that's what I'd say most people would like to play.

>30 burn vs 1 boss
lol you know everyone is going to play either burn or blue.

Are you trying to tell me there aren't other MtG games? Have you missed their annual releases from 2012?

Isn't cryptic known for making generic, shallow, p2w garbage? I have no hopes whatsoever despite me wanting this to be good

>mfw you bring a chaos deck to the fight

>consoles

meh, look what good that did xiv

>boss is t1 on the play, city of traitors mana crypt sol ring sphere of resistance sphere of resistance
pass

As in a game set in an MtG universe/plane.
Not a digital representation of the card game. Are you a twat?

It was definitely playable I got up to lvl 20 or so but it's also an mmo where I wouldn't invest any time.

Red/White master race.

>he didn't play shandalar

Sorry dude. if its gonna be like that, I KNOW I'm gonna be rocking that sweet sweet mono black Zombie action.

>not playing a u/w hieromancer, arresting pacifying and detaining all black players on sight

>read title
>FINALLY HOLY SHIT
>read "Cryptic Studios and Perfect World"

This timeline is fucking terrible.

Oh well maybe it will have good character customization like CO and STO.

I mean I probably will too but you know that people are going to come in and ruin the fun.

>developers of Neverwinter
Oh, so the only thing it will have in common with MtG is the name.
Great, I know not to look forward to it.
Just make the suffering stop.

shovelware

Are they making a MMORPG or just a 5 player co-op + queue simulator?

>Perfect World
After what they did to Champions Online and Neverwinter, no thanks.

No more lockboxes

>not black/green

shandalar mate

I guess they figured that because the fanbase was already a bunch of idiots willing to spend massive amounts of money a card game they would be able to easily implement the biggest cash cow scam type of game without having to put in all that much effort.
Hope you're ready for massive p2w that costs hundreds of dollars to even compete and doesn't even get you real world items that could be sold off or put in a collection at a later date.

what the fuck this sounds so bad

Bet on which plane it will be set, I bet on Ravnica.

>Yeah I think everyone expects it will be card battles.
hello delusion

Well cryptic was part of city of heros and i wasted way too much time playing that.

Just let there be a commander mode and I am set.

I want to bring in my clue commander deck for massive shits and giggles.

Wait, what if your factions are the Ravnica guilds?

Fuck, there are so many cool things they could do with the setting.

Dominaria if they want maximum troll.

Safe bet is Ravnica, but the issue with it is that Ravnica has enough content opportunity to last 10 MMOs and 20 years worth of expansions, so that's not a good starting place if you actually want to showcase several planes.

Then Izzet it is because fuck the other guilds. They are such shit.

I hope it features best girl.

there are many cool things they could do with the setting, but my money is on them squandering all of that to make a cheap shit game for a quick buck

you'll probably jump in between planes as you level up.
I'm thinking something like the current legion levelling, with scaling areas depending on your level, so you can come back and fight the strong stuff later on.
still, it's a horrible idea. great card game, great setting and world, but putting it on an mmo would turn it all to shit

>"Hmm what do we want, an actually good digital MtG client, or a shitty MMO made by a shitty dev that will have nothing to do with MtG?"
>"The MMO of course!"

Is this what board meetings in WotC are like?

that's a weird pic of azusa

No gerar, no buy.

>a DOS game from 97 exists, that's all we need
Neverwinter devs fuck off

>"Okay so what do the fans want now?"
>"That? How can we fuck it up?"
>"LETS RAISE THE PRICE OF PACKS AND GIVE THEM ONLY ONE CARD!"
>"good lord Johnson, you are getting a raise."

>we want to advertise MTG to more people
>lets hire some shovelware MMO makers to make a mtg themed one

>want to complain about lootboxes
>Magic invented them in a way

huh

Wizards having the good idea to make a MtG MMO ten years after MMOs stopped being relevant seems about right.

Am I the only one that actually wants a decent WoW clone in this setting? Worked with LotRO. I loved that game.

who said it's going to have anything to do with cards, retards?

>While we’ve seen Magic games before, most of them have been digital versions of the card game like the Duels of the Planeswalkers series and Magic Duels, a free-to-play game available for Xbox One, PC, and iOS"
this is clearly implying the game will have nothing to do with cards. is the average age of Sup Forums 15 years old these days?

>Cryptic Studios and Perfect World

So is going to be another free to play generic mmo.

>who said it's going to have anything to do with cards, retards?

Because otherwise it's absolutely pointless and literally nobody will play it.

why would anyone want to play this? the game already exists in the half dozen duels games.

you want a character that you actually control so you have to run around the world looking for someone to duel with? this would be retarded

I played it when it was recently launched so I dont know if this was changed years later but the PVP was pay to win. PVP mode was capture the point mode and people could use their mounts to get to them faster and the fastest mounts were all shop only.

Yeah that is why I stopped shitting on the idea of people paying for lootboxes.

I mean how fucking bad would that look like?

>God you fags getting fucking lootboxes
>As I just bought three fatpacks for three different sets

It even says on the official website that it will be an "Action MMO". How would an action mmo work with cards?

I bet it will play like Neverwinter, which is also a action MMO.

Zones will probably be different planes.

MtG has a better setting than any MMO out there, so the idea is solid. It all depends on the execution.

I don't get it, why are WotC so allergic to technology? Are they really so afraid that a good digital MtG game will devour paper sales?
Because paper sales are dropping just fine on their own, without WotC sabotaging them.

Make it play like Phantom Dust?

It might not be pay to win.

Sure STO has a shitton of pay, but they forgot to add any content to win using it.

No cards for you.

Wait, sales are finally tanking?

>the game has no holy trinity
DOA

Ravnica, with planeswalking to other places like Lorwyn and Innistrad.
Highest tier raids on New Phyrexia.
Expansions have you time-planeswalking to hang with the Weatherlight crew, shitpost with Urza or watch Mirrodin fall.

>It all depends on the execution.
We already know from who's making it, it will be shit if it's just a generic mmo with no ties to the card game, these people can't even make a game with good graphics to match the beatiful art of the landscapes of the MTG lore.

A neverwinter clone.

Will it use Improbable's technology?

If not, I'm not interested anymore.

>action mmorpg
I can't be the only one who's starting to get tired of these.

>cryptic
