Best indie game(s) of all time. Definitely in the top 5 games in the last 5 years.
Best indie game(s) of all time. Definitely in the top 5 games in the last 5 years
Remind me again why they removed the rape scene
Wouldn't know desu
1. hyper light drifter
2.terraria
3.kerbal space program
4.hotline miami
5.axion verge
6.hollow knight
7.shovel knight
8. enter the gungeon
9.binding of isaac
10.????
10. Titan Souls
They did not, they just added in an option to skip it.
And the reason they did it was because it was current topic at the time, and it generated some press.
They decided it didn't fit the game.
How do you rank Gungeon that high? It tries to be Bullet Hell + Isaac, but fails at both.
>No Super Meat Boy
Great game and one of the pioneers of the western indie scene.
1. Minecraft
2. Hotline Miami
3. Super Meat Boy
4. Rimworld
5. Machinarium
6. Gunpoint
7. Within a Deep Forest
8. Fez
9. Limbo
10. Eufloria HD
Really Gungeon? There are far better indies in that genre. Nuclear Throne for example.
It isn't even an indie game
Ye SMB was pretty good, also Owlboy.
Are both Hotline Miami's actually that good?
I'll be buying some games today and wonder if those two should go on my list.
Don't attempt to apply semantics to popular culture. It takes on a specific meaning outside of the technical one and is how people association it. Since language evolves through symbolic associations more so than technical definitions it doesn't really matter so long as the consensus remains. All your doing is looking like a faggot to the majority by saying "No buy srsly guise it's not indie". Just drop it.
1 is actually that good. 2 is nothing special.
Every time I think about all the indie games that I like I realize that the games I consider good indies games are in fact rarely indie.
Like Hotline Miami has Devolver Digital as a publisher. It's not indie.
Transistor and Bastion are my go-tos in my mind when somebody says good indie games but they're published by WB Games.
Am I being autistic? Is "Indie" the lack of a publisher or more a style of game?
If style than Transistor is undoubtedly the best indie game
The first one absolutely should. The second was is ok but falters compared to the original
Owlboy sucked. It was pretty, but as game it was ass.
Yes, they are good. First one is more arcade action, second is very different experience, but I enjoyed it at least as much.
>Am I being autistic? Is "Indie" the lack of a publisher or more a style of game?
It's definitely style and culture surrounding it.
The AVGN games are actually very good too. I might place them in the top 20.
I'm amazed Stardew Valley has not been mentioned yet.
Undertale is also notable, although actual gameplay value in that is questionable.
Indie just means independently developed. While Revolver publishes lots of indie games, they give very little financial support during developement, and handle the promotional side of things.
There's also studios that are technically indie like Doublefine, but given how much financial support they get elsewhere and how huge their team is, I really can't call them indie in good faith. These days lots of smaller dev teams which call themselves indie are just remicent of game developement teams from 90s and early 2000s.
Volgarr the viking was pretty good
>ctrl + f
>no papers, please
Top 5 indie games
1. Cave Story
2. Hotline Miami
3. Isaac
4. Shovel Knight
5. Skullgirls
Actually, replace Shovel Knight with Super Meat Boy
Sounds good
In that case my top 5 would be
>Transistor
>Hotline Miami
>Bastion
>Meat Boy
>Bit.Trip Presents: Runner 2
Spacechem
Papers Please
Hotline Miami
The Stanley Parable
VVVVVV
Teleglitch
LISA
Audiosurf
The Binding of Isaac
Sanctum 2
You're welcome, OP.
Technically not even indie. It was developed by Dennaton Games and published by Devolver Digital. Devolver is considered 'the indie publisher' but they're still a PUBLISHER.
Portal or Minecraft were the best indie titles, at the time of their launch, but Mojang later sold out and Valve has been toying with becoming a Publisher themselves in more recent years (or arguably has been ever since launching Steam, which can be thought of as an automated digital publishing platform).
So, definitely Dwarf Fortress.
why do people mention dumb tumblr meme indies but never real classics like cave story
Cave Story is a dumb Sup Forums meme.
Cave Story is a constant. It's shit like Iji that get's forgotten.
Can Journey be considered 'indie' ?
1. Journey
2. Hotline Miami
only ones I've enjoyed
Journey was published by Sony.
>Spacechem
>Papers Please
These also all the other Zachtronics games
>Gungeon
Nah my dude
Just nah.
Everything else is fine, even if youre obviously biased towards HLD
It's Cave Story and it's not close
Terraria and Hotline Miami would be in the top 10
Also Barkley Shut Up and Jam Gaiden is in the top 10
Is OFF considered an indie game?
If so, it should be in the top 10 imo.
yeah i agree
the way df is being developed and presented is pretty much that and its an incredible game
I'm eating pepper steak right now, my mate.
>CTRL-F FTL
>0 results
Jesus
>no la mulana
fucking casual normalfags get off ny board
>gunpoint
nice to see that gunpoint its not in the shadows
It was between that and Runner 2 for my number 5 on
It's a shit game and you know that.
>Muh RNG
FTL isn't shit, you're just bad at it.
I can count on one hand the number of true RNG scenarios that happen in the game that you cant just opt out of by leaving or avoiding.
>I'm shit at it so it's bad
Invisible Inc is close 2nd
Klei is god-tier
gud shit
1 Hotline Miami
2 Amnesia: the dark descend
3 The binding of Isaac
4 Terraria
5 Limbo
fuck your 5 years faggotry
I don't know why so many people said the story was incomplete/confusing.
They didn't.
EVERYTHING by ABA Games
VVVVVV is up there for me, pixelshit graphics don't hinder the fantastic gameplay.
Shovel knight probably takes the cake, although some of the challenges are pure bullshit.
How's limbo?
Strong points and flaws?
Got it for a cent in a humble bundle or grabbed in a steam key thread, can't remember
Nigga, mark of the ninja is good but not indie.
Good taste tho.
because hotline miami 2 pulled the "everyone dies" card at the height of the franchise's popularity
Spelunky
Nuclear Throne
I mean, Limbo was fun but I did everything possible in that game in like 4-5 hours. I've put hundreds of hours into these games.
>How's limbo?
It's an amazing one time experience. It instilled lasting emotions in me which is rare for a game to do and rarer still from a game with absolutely no dialog. Buy it.
>danny produces a god-tier soundtrack for super meat boy
>completely cocks up isaac's soundtrack
The Witness
Night in the Woods
Antichamber
Miasmata
Amnesia/SOMA
Super Meat Boy
Wtf no darkest dungeon?
FACTORIO
OIROTCAF
Does it use some interesting mechanics?
I don't mind short games, even ones with little to no replayability, but if i wanted movie-games whose only strong point is the story i would have bought a ps4
>Antichamber
I keep forgetting this game exists because I played through it the first weekend it came out and haven't visited it since, but man what a trip of a game. Probably the best first-person puzzle game outside of Portal. The Witness tried to be as creative and smart as Antichamber and failed horribly.
only times I have been fucked over badly by true RNG was with ships which are sadly enough vulnerable to it
one of those ships is the Stealth B, early on it's stealth doesn't last long enough to charge your weapon before your opponent charges and fires a low CD weapon and your engine isn't big enough to have 100% evasion during stealth
if you get hit in the weapon room (losing your ungodly long charge time) with one of those unavoidable hits, you're fucked
>No Furi
Bastion has to be the most overrated indie of all time.
Is this an earthboundlike like lisa and undertale? I see off mentioned all the time but have no idea what sort of game it is.
It's the earthboundlike that inspired Lisa and Undertale in the first place.
Me too mate, plenty of fun solving all of the puzzles.
Managed to sequence break a couple of them too, in particular the door that leads to the final levels by placing blocks in almost pixel-perfect positions and then sucking them back out
Yeah.
Napstablook and Ghost Fight are references to it.
>nobody mentioning Underrail
greatest rpg in recent years right there
>That combat
>The customization of the combat (Weapon/ability combo/god challenges)
>That music
>That narrator responding to what you do in the game
>Those plot twists at the end
>Carrying Zulf
Nah you're a faggot. It's top 5.
It's only overrated when you say it's better than Transistor.
replace Gungeon with FTL
Risk of Rain is probably my favourite indie game ever.
There's a reason it's still got recurring threads on here.
Limbo is all in its atmosphere and aesthetics. The platforming and puzzles are relatively simple but engaging enough to get you through. It's worth your time at least, if not your money.
honestly it's highly debatable which one of the 2 is the better game
often it just comes down to which characters you prefer
Hotline Miami
Darkest Dungeon
Undertale
Va11HallA
OlliOlli
Nuclear Throne
Isaac
>"Master Armstrong... Ple... Please... We don't need to.... Fff-fff-fight. She is... The future..."
I really enjoy how the game can be finished in ten minutes if you know what to do, even without being speedrunner-tier precise. The solution to the whole game is so simple once you've figured the game out, and it's in plain sight the whole time.
Nuclear throne and Risk of Rain would be up there for me
*clears throat*
Undertale
Minecraft
7 days to die
H1Z1
Cataclysm DDA
All I know is I tried multiple times to get into it over the years and the game never hooks me. The narrator is didn't blow my mind either. I liked the art style though
Throne and CaveStory, no question.
Transistor's combat system takes the customization idea from Bastion and takes it to an entirely different level with the processes all having 3 different modes that can go into nearly any slot. Its combat system was something completely new while Bastion was a very very good action game at an isometric angle
looped with e ery character. I even got melting b skin. Rogue b was a pain for me too
nigga h1z1 is Sony.
Rimworld
Factorio
Devil Daggers
Terraria
Battleright
That is an issue of tastes on your end and nothing more. My recommendation would be experimenting with preferred weapon combos.
>Battleright
Battlerite
while in theory the combat system is a lot better, I found it way to easy to figure out an optimal build and the game didn't really provide all that much incentive to actually experiment beyond it because let's face it, it was quite easy
still a great game don't get me wrong but it could have been a lot better
>if not your money
I got it for free, they had one of those "grab it now, keep it forever" things last year
It was the best flavour of the month zombie game and I haven't played anything except for zombie games since Undertale came out. Also the game feels very indie.
Technically speaking HM was published by devolver so it's not really an indie game. Same for transistor, bastion, and i assume enter the guneon too since i never gave a shit about it
But yeah, hotline miami is pretty top tier, so are RoR, deadbolt, la mulana, Va11HallA and hyper light drifter
Does Talos Principle count? If so, thats mine
>Technically speaking HM was published by devolver
you wot m8
disregard this post I'm an idiot and user is right
No, but it can be considered awful.
>it was quite easy
Confirmed for not actually finishing the game
New Game+ has totally new encounters that are gonna push your "optimal" builds shit inward.
Darkest Dungeon
Hotline Miami
Super Meat Boy
holy trinity of indies
The term indie doesn't really mean what it used to. Even in "Indie Game the Movie" all the games were published by Microsoft, which goes directly against the definition of indie they gave in the movie.
