I enjoyed both (just today finished DS1) and I think they each did something right. Inventory management and subobjectives of one were better, and the monster variety was incorporated in a better way (2 has maybe two dividers in the entire game?) but the controls and mechanics were improved in 2. The environments were imo better in 2 and added more mystery, while Isaac was a real person and not just illogically unresponsive mime you control to go through the game.

You took my post literally and in that sense you are correct (MGS4 exists only because fans demanded it) but that's not my point. MGS3 is exactly what fans imagined after playing MGS on the PSX. They got MGS2 where you play as Raiden and the game is a ride of deconstruction of itself and it discusses identity, culture and memes. The game goes past its boundaries to explore various ideas. MGS3 lets you play as Snake with personal storyline concerning Snake and other characters and nothing past that. It's a very good game but it's still just a cheap bandaid for sore minds disappointed with MGS2 being too deep.
