So i'm a massive FF fan but i've never touched either of the MMO games, mostly because I know it would end up sucking up a lot of valuable time. But I just graduated basically, so i'm thinking of starting FFXIV, is this a good time to start now with the new expansion coming out? Will it take forever to level up?

Bare in mind, I can only play it on PS4 for the moment, how is it on PS4?

it runs rather nicely on PS4 actually, it looks damn good.

Only thing is, you'll have to take some time doing the UI, especially if you're using controller but it's totally doable.

As for leveling up, there are a lot of options now to help with leveling (there will be level jump potions if you're impatient @ $25 a pop).

Is SAM a good DPS?

It was made to work on PS4, you'll have no trouble with it if you're worried just because it's on console.

As for the time it takes to get to Stormblood? It won't take that long if you skip the cutscenes especially with the increase to XP gain they'll be making soon, but I feel if you skip the cutscenes you miss a big part of the game since you're forc ed to do it you might as well enjoy it for what it is.

As long as you keep aggro, that's actually a good a thing. The healer wouldn't DPS anyway and you can at least throw that 20% bonus damage to help speed up the fight.

There is no "bad time" to start XIV since it is designed for new and returning players to be able to catch up and hit the "this is where everyone is grinding now" point with very little "catch up grinding" involved.
You just need to clear the story quests to progress, and the game is mostly singleplayer JRPG outside of dungeons and endgame content. It is a pretty long journey (A Realm Reborn can be very slow and boring since it is designed like a huge tutorial for people that never played MMOs before, but it gets better in Heavensward), but if you are a "massive FF fan" you are probably already used to this kind of thing.

That blade isn't fat enough to be a DRK weapon.

It's a very good time, the road to level cap/endgame will become super smooth with basically zero grinding up untill the end. Btw FFXIV is very story-driven (although that's not always a good thing, it does have its boring moments) so even if you're not used to MMOs you can actually just treat it as a mainline FF. It's time consuming to get to the end, but just because it's long and not because of the grind, so if you do like the journey, why not.

You don't need to prepare shit, PotD doesn't use gear and at 60 you'll just get it from quests or buy it from vendors

What's wrong with the first one? No one wants to go through a bunch of bullshit amounts like 23/44/72/61, people either want a full stack, a single one or a few but not fucking loads. Of course crystals would have no cap as they have a separate inventory.

Why do spells go off when you move and the casting still has about 0.3 seconds left? It does this weird and floaty animation and continues to cast the spell

most of the time the game doles out skills in a way that makes sense, one of the biggest problems(among others) with potd being the premier method of leveling is that you get the skills way too fast so you can't actually learn where they fit in naturally

blm specifically kinda throws you into the deep end since your entire playstyle changes completely at or near level cap
it was especially bad at hw launch since neverreap was one of the only two endgame dungeons, and that dungeon either made you switch off blm entirely or you got gud real quick

The server updates your movement position every 0.3s, WoW does this too. If you move right before a cast is finished, the server is too late the register the movement to cancel the spell so it goes off.

At level 43 so One decent dungeon available every 2 levels, whereas once I'm at 50 there's a million of them.

Does PotD give good EXP? I've never done it at all

Option 1:
POTD to 60 and never use gear and unlock your AF at 70
AF3 is unlocked at 70 for all jobs.

Option 2:
Craft ilvl 115 gear and use the weapon they give you in the first quest to unlock

Option 3:
Obtain Ironworks(Aug)/Dreadwyrm gear and 10 rowena soldiery token and an encrypted tomestone for the weapon for 130 gear which will last until 57 when you reach the vault.

Great time actually. There's a large influx of new and returning players.

I recommend rolling a tank class because they didn't introduce any new ones this expansion, and it's a role that is always in demand. On top of that, 1-50 is getting a massive EXP boost to help players catch up.

If you buy the bundle or just get Stormblood eventually, then you can start the Red Mage class when you hit 50 and beat the base game. Both new jobs start at Lv 50 so you don't have to level them all over.

the best way to level a tank is just spamming dungeons since you get next-to-instant queues and it gives the best experience.

Use Poetics to get lv50 i120 gear (ironworks), it will last until about lv55.
They said Poetics will be used for both lv50 and lv60 gear so I assume they will remain while Lore and Scripture will become obsolete (still tradeable for Poetics though, as it happened for Esoterics).

The problem with this approach is the healer MIGHT be inclined to dps, but not if the tank stands in aoes constantly. You might be better off just telling them instead of hoping they get the hint because there's always a chance the tank is ACTUALLY retarded
