It's not just nostalgia goggles?!
The old fags were right and this game is actually fun?!
Why the fuck is this so much more fun then most of AAA shit coming out now?

It has some difficulty, it feels strategic the way you try to find the best way to engage the different enemies with different weapons, the level design is good and rewards exploration.
Casuals, greed, shit critics.
Whatever, WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE WADS AND/OR MODS AND WHY?
Besides graphics the game still a solid 9/10
and then you were the nostalgiafag
Beautiful Doom.
Then Reverie or Back to Saturn X ep 1. Though I swear to god health packs gangraped the author of Reverie's mom or something because they're not enough per level.
At least there's mods like Beautiful Doom and Smooth Doom to make it look nicer, without changing the gameplay.
>fun
Classic buzzword. When will Sup Forums finally grow up?
The real question is why is Blood still so hard to play?
It was the original FPS, the grandfather of all you see today. Nothing fancy you just kill things and find new weapons.
The game was made because the creators wanted to share their vision not to get money.
...
Someone showed me smooth doom here once.
Tried it. Loved it. Great way to play the game.
I think you're talking about Wolfenstein 3D, which predates Doom by at least a year.
what difficulty should doom be played at?
i play at Hurt Me Plenty
UV.
Nightmare is intentionally unfair
The community usually plays at Ultra-Violence. It has the most monsters, and there's no health or damage scaling, just more demons to mow down.
Nightmare has respawning enemies so it's more of a gimmick difficulty.

take it easy brothers
>fun levels that reward exploring

it's pretty simple, really
WHERE'S THE ARTIFACT, KINSIE?
...
Which Doom levels remakes are better: the DTWID kind or the "Knee Deep In ZDoom" kind?
I'm surprised there isn't a source port that let's you properly adjust FOV yet. I have to adjust view bob when I play now, since it makes me a bit sick.
is the doom shotgun the most iconic vidya weapon ever?
Not really, but the BFG9000 could be.
I'd have to say that'd be the half life crowbar.
I go back every other month to try new wads. Truly one of the most moddable games of all time.
is half life good? im wary about playing it because its incomplete
>tfw there will never be a shotgun as satisfying to use in vidya as the OG doom shotgun
life is pain.
The double barrel is probably the most copied weapon

By the way, Space Hunter is out.
Smooth Doom?
Neat. I spend most of my time with vanilla plus mods like smooth doom nowadays.
it's amazing. I played half life 2 before it and was blown away at how much better it was. opposing force is just as good, if not better.
Adds more sprited and animations.
What's wrong with the graphics, fag? The game looked incredibly advanced for the time, and it still looks recognizable and distinct because of how good the art direction is. Bitch.
Basically it's doom with added frames of animation for just about everything.
More frames for death animations of enemies, more frames for weapon animations, more frames for explosions, etc. All animations just look, well, smoother.
GOTTA GO FAST
Same style, just more animation frames.
Reloading weapons was a huge step forward for FPS games.
Doom is antiquated.
Speaking of MetaDoom, Kinsie got a 1 day ban in the ZDoom forums for arguing with a furry, who also got banned.
I think it was about Graf breaking menus or something.
original soundtrack and level design are key rather than call of fucking niggers rinse and repeat bullshit also try Disruptor underated and has that feeling of intruige to it
SCYTHE 2

What does reloading add to gameplay
strategy and something to do because i have ocd
muh realism
I love how colorful and bright it is, try to catch a horror/action game nowadays that's just as fun to look at, pretty much impossible.
>play game for 5 minutes
>stop playing to post on v about how fun it is
Reminder that original campaigns, and nearly every single fan made wad was designed to be beaten from a pistol start. If you're not playing each level from a pistol start, then you're underappreciating the hard work that went into its design.
>he can't appreciate the joy of slamming in a new magazine
*clip
Doom called them clips. Fucking know-nothings.
A programmer/designer (John Romero) and artist (Adrian Carmack) who made Doom are developing a new FPS game that is supposed to be in the style of the old ID games.
it's designed to be possible from a pistol start. keeping your guns and ammo is a reward for not dying, pistol starting is the punishment.
it is more fun though. shame zdoom makes it such a pain in the ass to enforce.
I've been playing a level of Heretic every time my internet drops out and yeah, you basically need to wand-start or you can just pop a book at the start of every level and clean half the levels in half a minute.
reminder to play heretic on the highest difficulty, because it's actually balanced instead of intentionally retarded like nightmare
If doom is so fun why there isn't any clone making a easy buck on steam RIGHT NOW?
Ther are, but they're failling at it.
Also, we have mods and stuff made for the game, to keep the scene alive.
FPS genre distilled to its bare essentials, and all those bare essentials are performed to excellence whithin the confines of 94 graphics and not stacking rooms on top of one another.
Thought about making a commercial game with the Doom engine, seeing as GZDoom is now GPL. Not sure if it's a good idea in the long run, though.
The only people who understand how to clone it properly are modders that aren't scummy enough to charge money for it.
It has THE best movement controls of ANY 3-D game EVER, plus arguably the most satisfying weapons or at least among the most satisfying weapons, and those are really the two most important things at the core of any FPS.
Brutal Doom because it enhances the experience without changing any more than you want changed.
Having the best level design of any FPS doesn't hurt either.
Plus the best and most memorable enemy designs.
And SICK AS FUCK atmosphere that's ACTUALLY scary without even trying to be.
I love these games but these guys + lost souls are sometimes not fun to fight.
Every other enemy is fun to fight even when overwhelmed.
This mod and a good map is pure sex
I would disagree on BD not changing any more than one would want changed, but i heard an update will let you disable reloading, so that could be good.
Why bother when you can play the original?
>It has THE best movement controls of ANY 3-D game EVER
It's barely even accurate to call it a 3D game. I get that you like the movement but come on. Sliding around on a flat surface cannot qualify for "best 3D movement ever."
Is there a mod that does this? Seems like it'd be such a simple thing to do.
I played Doom 1 and 2 late last year and Quake 1 early this year. They are good but man they are overrated. I don't think they are as good as people say.
But then again, I play old classic games all the time so I am used to them. The last time I played a new release was Rising Storm in 2013. I think the Build Engine games are a lot better than anything Id did.
These fuckers and Chaingunners can consistently ruin everything for me
>that part in The Pit where the game baits you into getting a soulsphere and a rocket launcher only to open up a wall with 400 chaingunners
This
Loads of maps cocktease you by showing a shotgun or rocket launcher on a pedestal out of reach, and you only get it after winning a difficult fight. These would be completely meaningless if you already had all your shit from previous levels; the weapon would be nothing but extra ammo for you,
You can do Brutal Doom with just the classic weapons and no weapon changes or modifications. You can also use the Ketchup Gore mod which is just the enhanced gore with no gameplay changed whatsoever.
>Playing Pirate Doom
>That part where Highway to Hell starts playing.
Just level skip to the level you want and you'll start with just the pistol.
Got a list of QOL mods?
>why is it fun?
it has simple mechanics, spooky, has a good degree of difficulty, doesnt blow its load early in the game (you keep finding new demons the whole way through) and the maps put modern FPSs to shame. also the key cards force you to explore and find all the hidden secret rooms and items. there are lots of ways for you to impose challenges on yourself, like trying to get all the items, beat the level under a certain time limit, killing all enemies, finding all secrets, or all of the above.
that being said i think doom 2 is my favorite
No, it's still fun.
I play it time from time, vanilla or mods, and it's great.
Quake has the best movement. Also its true 3D
BD changes a lot of things, makes low threat monsters higher threat, makes high threat monsters lower threat, and evens out the balance of weapons as well, which completely breaks the intended balance of most maps.
Also breaks several Boom-based scripting mechanics, causing many levels reliant on them to stop working correctly - like finishing several levels of Scythe and Scythe 2 in 30 seconds after start because instead of running globally several scripts are written as player-centric functions and thus doubled onto the voodoo doll.
Basically any voodoo-doll scripting is prone to get broken because of that.
Also causes infights within some monster groups right at the start of a level, where none should take place in vanilla.
Unholy Realms is an ideal megawad. Has a classic progression from tech base to hell levels, and all the hell levels are just fantastic.
Going Down is chatoic as hell; built around fighting waves of enemies in tight areas; every fight feels like a puzzle of how to not get trapped in a corner. A fun wad to play gameplay mods such as demonsteele with
Pirate Doom is hillarious, has a full set of neato new weapons, and every map is a treat.
Ancient Aliens is fucking hard, but it has some of the most beautiful shit I've seen in Doom in a long time
This is patrician as fuck also
>BD changes a lot of things
See:
Script breaking shit still happens in classic mode because Mark is a retard.
Speaking of Heretic, any of yall play Elf Gets Pissed from the last cacowads? Pretty good
It's just really, really, really, really well made. From top to bottom.
I never played doom but I think it's because of its simplicity. Same shit happened when I played the very first castlevania.
The graphism are good at conveying what is going on and are stylised which makes them enjoyable. The music is also very dynamic and add a lot to the game.
But what make those games great are the simple yet satisfying gameplay. You start out a bit confused as to how use it to beat the game but as you play you start to get better rather quickly and you progress with each moment. Even when you're stuck, you can still get this feeling of getting closer and closer to the victory.
This is something that a lot of modern game doesn't provide because in a lot of them the gameplay moments are either filler until the next big cinematic moment or easy enought to get through while playing badly.
For some reason I really like that sisters of mercy song in the second level for this wad.
Well Doom has been cloned to death for one. Also what the others who replied to you said.
I know a lot of people say Doom is all about the fast, but I think it really got universal appeal because it compliments all sorts of play styles.
You can go fast, you can play peek-a-boo from corners. Play dangerous with the super shotgun, play slow and safe with the rocket launcher.
try out duke nukem and shadow warrior next. i'll never get tired of them.
when people talk about console mascots, ill always default to duke for pc. it's such a fun game and if you're a fan of classic zelda games and doom, the best way to sell it is as a combination of the two
>It's not just nostalgia goggles?!
yes it is
Tight focused design and good map design (for the most part).
Game these days, Doom 2016 included, try to cram too much stuff in, token RPG elements are the biggest problem IMO. That and 'play it your way' nonsense.
Doom didn't need them, it just needed more weapon and monster variety and new maps, that doom 2016 provided anyway.
is it cheating to use vertical aim
Are there any cool crazy wads that aren't Demonsteele?
is it cheating to use mouse for horizontal aim? Always used the keys before but I'm enjoying it so far.
This is all right, but I'm going to add to it. Another thing that makes Doom so great is the enemy and level design. Along with Doom's tendency to make you fight MANY demons all at once. It's not uncommon to open a room and wade through hundreds of imps.
Hell even Quake missed this by making enemies bullet sponges. And nearly every other game does this now.
Doom's weapon balance is nearly perfect. Every weapon is useful for certain situations. You'll get to use them all as you go through the game with the exception of the pistol. Even though they're all fairly simple. This is also something that mods like Brutal Doom miss by adding too much shit.
>making enemies bullet sponges
There's a reason why though
Yeah I know, they couldn't get the same enemy count in Doom in a 3D game, but modern games have no excuse.
I do wonder if there's a mod for source ports that adds more enemies and fixes the health pool. although the levels were designed for those few enemies
