Yooka only got hate because it didn't live up to everyone's unreasonably high expectations. It's a decent Indie game. Nothing special, but not bad.

Only Mario and Crash have good level design though. SEGA should get the Sonic Mania guys to try a 3D Sonic game.

Yooka Laylee was the Mighty No 9 of mascot platformers. They made no attempt to reinvigorate the genre. They simply created a platformer with nothing to set it apart from what came before. It was uneventful, unoriginal, and poorly designed in all aspects.

I think they're hoping it'll be good/popular enough to be a system seller for people who don't like darker games. Exclusivity is shit but broadening your install base demographic is never a bad thing to try.

Eh, Earthbound was a flop in terms of sales but it was an objectively great game.

I played it 5-6 years after it came out and thought it was pretty great. Definitely not 'oh hai mark' tier.
