Yoshi has a 'flight' trick where after you reach 'flight' speed, you can hold a in your jump to soar with yoshi for a bit. It doesn't have to be all at once. You can tap it once, wait, then press and hold it. Go try it out.

Not true, if you're good at flying you can fly under it, or use a blue Yoshi (which you can get in that level with the wings) and grab a shell to fly under.
