Is there any chance that Nintendo might port some of their 3DS games to Switch or even sell 3DS games on the new virtual console? Would 3DS emulation be feasible on the Switch hardware?
I want to play the Metroid remake, but I'd rather not buy another system, especially one that has 240p screens.

New 2DSXL at $150 is a steal. There's some pretty good games to play and you get the entire DS library too

I actually still have a DS Lite.
If I were to get any variant of 3DS, it would be a used or refurbished 2DS for $60 or less.
I saw a used 2DS on ebay for under $50 with some cosmetic damage.
But I'd really prefer to not buy one at all, especially if it's likely that they'll start releasing 3DS games for Switch.

Question for you seasoned 3DS people; I had a 3DS-XL 3 years ago, played it for 4 months and sold it. Would I be able to download my old digital purchases onto a new 2DS/3DS? Or was that shit tied to my old 3DS?

I kind of understand wanting to give you another option in combat, but the way the enemies telegraph their charges and how easy it looks to time it's pretty much free damage
They do make Samus look cool, though

Sure. Likely to happen? Most likely not. If it did happen though, that would allow the games to be approximately 5x as clear as they currently are, or probably a bit less since you technically wouldn't use every pixel in the screen due to the unmatched sizes and different aspect ratio.
