The issue was really not about free speech. It was about the fact that, very obviously, discussion of a stupid scandal was being shut down. Scandals are scandalous for a reason. People want to talk about them. When they're not allowed to talk about them, that's when you get movements.

Gamergate was less about free speech and more about how badly the people in charge mishandled a stupid piece of gossip that would have gone away in a week or two. It was the memetic manifestation of the Streisand Effect.
