You were thinking correctly. It's just a shame the HD edition on Steam is garbage. I can't remember the exact issue I had but it involved me not being able to move properly, like I couldn't move if I came to a complete stop without jumping first or something dumb like that. Completely ruined it. Xbox version was amazing.
Most of these are available and better on PC

I wouldn't know, but I did try the game sometime last year and still had the issue. I'll try it again soon but I won't hold my breath. I'm actually planning on buying an original Xbox like OP soon anyway. Apparently there was a PS3 version and I was thinking about buying a PS3 too assuming I can find one that can run backups.
