I'm about 5 hours in and I'm not particularly compelled to it. I like the weirdness of some elements and 2Bs ass, but that alone doesn't make it good to play.

I am on the same boat Lad. I played it for 11 hours and havent touched it in 2 months. I was expecting something else. If you didn't like it the first 5 hours then stop playing. It doesn't get better. There is no amazing landscape/level that you missed out. No amazing bossfight or a different enemy either. Like you said, the highlight of the game is setting up your camera to zoom, self destructing by pressing both analog sticks for 3 seconds, go down the sewers, get wet, and look at that magnificent ass. This is the highlight, i am not joking. the combat doesnt get any better either nor will you find any interesting side quest. It's just cringeyy stuff liek guiding the lost robot child back to his mom. The enemies also remain the same, the same tin cans with their glwoing red eyes to tell you when to dodge. There's a serpent thing like Twinmold before you discover the aliens but that's it.
As someone who stugggled with the same issue, just finish the first playthrough and continue with the second. If you aren't hooked on the second one then it isn't worth playing.
2b is a lame protagonist. I found 9s to be more relatable

I'm honestly confused what makes it good. The dialogues are very bland and obvious exposition you see in animes.
There's some additional context sprinkled throughout it, and some story segments that aren't in the first playthrough.
But other than that, pretty much what you described.
You do, with added cutscenes that tell the machine side of things to an extent plus some other weird shit.
9S also has hacking which is OP as fuck.

It's one of those stories where the ending changes everything, and it also leaves a lot of clues about the final twist, but it's going to be pretty hard to piece them together before the reveal, but try to anyways. Try to pay attention to details, ESPECIALLY the inconsistent/cringeworthy parts

The tedious combat represents the tedium in our lives, and being constantly interrupted to go play the hacking minigame symbolizes our desire to escape from the tedium, but only into another form of it. There is no escape, just like there is no escape from BASED YOKO TARO bringing us on his LOONY MAD MAN WILD RIDE yet again! You secondaries will just never get it!

Yes, which is why it's not better. Similar playthrough with bullet hell "hacking" segments and different minigames. Definitely not different enough to require a mandatory second playthrough.
Drop it. Doesn't seem like your enjoying it and it's not like the game magically becomes a 10/10 GOTYAY out of nowhere. The combat doesn't get fleshed out that much if at all, not like it's needs to be as there's no real reason or threat to push you to learn the ins and outs of combat (playing on hard btw). The bosses are so piss easy and boring aside from 1 I was actually disappointed that this was made by Platinum. The second playthrough actually bored the shit out of me and almost made me want to drop the game then and there due to playing as 9S. Not that he's insufferable or annoying he's just not fun to play as and hacking gets boring after the first 10 times you do it. It was interesting to see different sides to the story by playing as 9S but that didn't warrant going through essentially the same shit as the first playthrough.
I'm going through ending C and I'm enjoying it just because it's completely new ground in terms of the story and because I'm not playing as 9S (sweet jesus when it gave me the option to choose between 9S and A2 I chose A2 in a fucking heartbeat). All in all I don't think it's a bad game at all. I guess I'm just a little let down that certain aspects of the game are a bit lacking such as the combat, boss fights, and the open world.
I'm not into /ss/, why does the game force me to play as the shitty manlet all the time?
I played it on the basis that parts of it were comparable to MGS2. All i got was waifu pandering, mediocre gameplay, and a fairly generic story.

It's something that comes back full circle but even just having to explain that ruins a bit of the mystique.
Attention to detail and patience is a good trait to have.
But if people are already losing interest and dropping it a few hours in there's really no two ways around it.
Combat is rather simple and straightforward.
To have a ravaged post-apocalyptic world not be sort of empty would seem counter-intuitive for the setting, as for traversal there are options that help make it less of a chore.
