With Red Dead delayed to 2018, is Nintendo literally competing against themselves for GOTY 2017? I unironically mean this, these games have the broadest normie appeal imaginable and while there have undeniably been a ton of standout games this year, there's no way something like Persona 5 is gonna beat either of these.

Persona 5 has a lock for RPG of the year, should get some OST nods as well. Horizon will snatch away some GOTY awards, almost certainly western shit like TGA will choose it over anything Japanese. BoTW might get snubbed because it'll be old news come December-January.
Champion's Ballad comes out in Fall, so BotW should still be fresh on everyone's minds.

I can easily imagine Mario taking it over over Zelda.
Zelda on the other hand is a game I believe could have easily, easily won an outstanding GotY. Had it been released in the holiday season at the very least. Or at the very least not had to compete with something like Mario that would release towards the holiday season.
Recency bias is a very real thing. Unless Zelda's DLC pack 2 is absolutely amazing, and as surprising as the base game originally was. Mario might very well take it, unless Mario ends up being a disappointment overall. Otherwise Zelda could probably easy take it.
I'll be incredibly surprised if a game that is neither was to win GotY though. That just wouldn't happen.
There is no heavy hitter slated for 2017. And it's unlikely for an unannounced game or game without a release to suddenly slam down and win GotY like that.
