I have one and it's a fun handheld and my first Nintendo since the Gamecube.They already have nice games such as

The Wii U had very mediocre Mario titles, didn't have a Metroid, no Fire Emblem, not even an animal Crossing.

I think Nintendo has a fixed amount of potential users. They are very loyal in general and they are attached to their franchises.
It's up to the company to meet their demands and don't disappoint them. If they manage to do that, the Switch will be a success. I don't really see it making it to casual tier success at the point where playing in front of people won't be a cause of embarassement, but still it has the potential of surpassing the wii u by far.

The problem the Wii U had was that the 3DS was getting way too much attention, causing massive game droughts, and the very few worthwhile games on the thing being ported not too long after didn't help matters either. Nintendo seems to be shifting their main focus to the Switch now, with Pokemon's 8th generation coming to the thing and production on the 3DS slowing down at a noticeable rate. The Switch is already having a lot of Nintendo IP's made for the thing while it took years for a decent amount to be released on the Switch.
