Honestly clones aren't that bad, especially Falco and Ganondorf are very different in high level play, and Doc and Ylink are more viable than their core characters, effectively making them better versions of the originals for high level play.

Personally I still believe (meta notwithstanding) Brawl had the best roster, added plenty of new faces (Sanic, Snake, Dedede/Meta Knight, Ike) while removing blatant clones like Dr. and Pichu.

Nah, I think Smash 4, in its own series, easily eclipses Melee's. Even Brawl had a better roster and that game was shit aside from some of the character choices, some characters themselves (like fucking Snake), some of the stages, and that god-tier OST.

The quality of the clones in Smash 4 is much worse though. Fucking Lucina and Dark Pit have like one difference and could have been alts. Tier lists even consider Pit and Dark Pit to be the same character.
