I'd like to think so, because I don't know who would still shop there for new titles, and there's two reasons for that. Number one, they may end up selling you an opened copy as new. It's a practice they refer to as gutting, so they can have display cases for the game. Number two, GameStop doesn't offer a discount on titles like their competition now does. I can't imagine anyone buying a video game marked at MSRP when you can easily purchase a $60 title for $45 before tax at select retailers.

The only thing that I imagine is keeping them afloat is their trade in program. Years ago, I would buy games on clearance at places like K-Mart and Target, then hold onto them for trade in deals at GameStop, which would net me a pretty big net gain especially if I was willing to buy used games and wait for a B2G1 deal.

My friend got into a huge argument with a gamestop worker over this. The employee reasoned that the game was technically "new" since it had never been played. My friend wasn't having none of that.

Gutted copies should be illegal.

It's why I stopped buying from them. That's like me selling a game on eBay with the game and manual out of its case and calling it "Brand new". If it's not in shrink wrap I don't want it for shrink wrapped price.

My local one (pallisades mall NY) features an autistic 19 year old that puts the wrong games in cases and a half Mexican half gook girl who can't ring you up because every Manlet in New York is telling her how interesting her budding hip hop production career is. I go in there to buy dark souls 3, they tell me they don't have it because it hasn't been released. This was two months ago. Then they spend 15 minutes trying to sign me up for protection programs and auto enrolling/payment bullshit.

Gamestop employee here. Fun job but the constant questions is not something we want to do we have to reach a sales goal and if we dont hours get cut and given to other employees who are meeting goals and the more ring ups you do the more goals you need to meet. also if you buy a new game and its the last copy of it you'll most likely get the gut case with a copy of the game never played and if they are doing their job right they will shrink rap it for you. But the promotional shit questions are fucking terrible becuase you can see the guest getting angrier I just want to help them find a game they would enjoy and let them be on there way I hate all the extra bullshit. they are actually able to hold on to a wide selection of games. japanese games and unimportant titles like carmageddon and assault suit reymos will actually be at gamestop. unless you want to shop online you will never find shit aside from the most generic AAA titles.

these things will disappear soon. but the worst part is that even still gamestop may stay behind as a glorified thinkgeek. so all you guys who want gamestop to "die" are just making it worse by not taking advantage of their actual values.

Consider the sizes of modern games bloating out of control, and the internet not getting much faster for the average family, it just isn't viable. You can only go all-digital if you think your customers can afford to spend two days downloading the damn things.
