Firstly, every single heat sink I've ever bought had had thermal paste preapplied. Even if you removed it for some reason, it should have acted as a guide for how much you needed to add, which is a tiny amount.

Secondly you should have known you added way too much. Adding enough it leaks onto the motherboard is insane, and there is no reason at all you shouldn't have known this and saw how badly it was leaking.

Clean it and post results.

All you have to do is pick a processor. From there you can search for what mobo you want by socket type. Then you can pick RAM and a case accordingly. The other components you need will likely work in any machine.
