Games you were so confident were going to be mind-numbingly good, hidden gems that had passed you by but after hearing nothing but religious praise from almost every outlet and gamer you knew you could not afford to pass up the opportunity to experience. Then you did and were only left with the bitter taste of realizing you had been conned into wasting hours of your life with naive anticipation and excitement.

Eternal Darkness is cool though.

Sounds like you just had too high expectations.

The last of us

It's like watching six or seven mediocre movies in a row.

Persona 4

This is literally the best game ever made though you IDIOT

Yeah Eternal Darkness had some really good ideas but it is far from perfect.

yeah i wonder how....

I agree with this statement

My cousin scared the shit out of me with this game back in 2003, never forget.
I've played it recently, its not that scary. For its time though? pretty well done. It also had the hilarious volume changer aspects to it and all that, which will never work agian.

such a cool idea bogged down by repetitive gameplay, the only draw I had to continue was seeing what era was next

I really like the melee targeting of limbs in this game, that was a great step for these survival horror type games. The end part where you have to light all the beacons as the professor and then again as his granddaughter is a real slog though.

I played it when it came out. you are just some punk 15 year old who went back and fell for the hype before even playing it. shush yourself.

damn dude you played this game BEFORE it was POPULAR? That's fucking SICK tell me how much better everything was playing games over composite on a 13 inch hand me down crt

I'm 25, I also played this game years ago, thought the "virtual insanity" gimmick was pretty neat and thought I was going to love the adventure/survival horror aspects more but the game ends up being boring as fuck and squandering it's own potential. Doesn't matter what year you played it in.

>I'm a post-2000 born autist who thinks all games should be as homogenised and polished as modern games with quadrupal the budget

I bet you were pissed off that it didn't have an Arkham Asylum style combat system as wellw you little faggot.

Growing up with Resident Evil and Silent Hill, I gotta say I loved Eternal Darkness. Perfected that style and had an actual story and feeling of a grander scale.

>I listen to obvious joke posts
You have no one to blame but your dumbass self.

No, he was pissed of that it didn't have dark souls combat.

It's pretty good though.

Walking to pick up the tome of Eternal Darkness creeped me out each time especially as you see a statue of the character you just were controlling and they're dead. Except for that Indiana Jones like dude, that guy isn't affected by any of this kooky shit.

Eternal Darkness was one of those games that was carried by its visuals, atmosphere, and totally unique story at the time. They made up for really basic gameplay and level designs. And back then the insanity effects were such a clever idea that they really did fool you / freak you out rather than being a quirky novelty.

Basically, the game was a product of its time and it aged like total trash.

eternal darkness was great
you pleb

Majora's Mask. No matter how many times I've tried (probably like 10 now) I just can't get into it. That time system is just the worst. I can play every other Zelda game but that. Holy fuck I don't know how people praise that cancer like it's the greatest game ever.

I've always avoided that one because I hate child Link.

OP go play DCotE, you mixed your lovecraftian games

Jokes on you, the game was never popular.

Why do people even like this game

everything except the gameplay

though critting a smile is pretty satisfying

Fits your description. I don't care if anyone gets mad.

Doesn't nintendo own this ip? They should make a sequel

Play the 3DS version.

Yeah, I feel similarly.
Played it a year ago and while it was enjoyable it was also heavily flawed.
The sanity mechanic doesn't really work since regain is basically free and the villains are just laughable. I loved the changing setting and many of the support characters though.

I tried that the last 3 times. It's still horrible.

I agree. Without the sanity gimmick (which only happens when you fuck up) all you have is a generic boring horror game that hasn't aged well. It doesn't help that reviewers of the game spoiled most of the cooler sanity effects.

I always felt it was a neat idea that had a terrible implementation. Things die so quickly that in the same hits to remove a limb, you could have just hit it in the head and killed it. Repeat that for every enemy. Sure it was cute to watch a zombie wander around armless, but there was basically no thought put into the mechanic gameplay-wise.

Actually, that kind of sums of a lot of the game.

>having issues with the time system

lmao with the song of double time you easily get 4-5 hours of play before you need to reset

how is that in any way pressuring you?

I think it was interesting because typically in these survival horror games using melee weapons was almost always a death sentence unless you got super skilled with a knife. In this game though melee is almost as good, sometimes better than guns. Cutting several zombies in half with one swipe of a broadsword is pretty satisfying and efficient. If I were to complain about a system in this game it would definitely be the magic, basically it trivializes the whole challenge of the game.

Metal Gear Solid 3 and Devil May Cry 3. Neither have aged well.

Because it's always there and if you miss your opportunity to do something you have to reset again. It's bullshit.

That game is the game I loved and recommend to everyone I can and then they end up hating it. They don't even think the sanity effects are cool or that there's any elements of fear to it.

Explain how either of those games have aged poorly or stop using "hasn't aged well" in place of "I'm a huge casual baby"

Nothing in the game is so difficult or long that you would need several attempts at it, except for maybe a couple of the more obscure masks, which are not at all required

In the pre-YouTube days, Donkey Kong 64. Now it's cool to hate it.

nice projection, lol.

That doesn't make it any less infuriating when you have to do it.

You're actually just throwing a tantrum over something you personally dislike without having any sort of actual argument to bring forward

is this Sup Forums personified

This whole thread is about opinions on games that are said to be these fantastic life-changing experiences but PERSONALLY you found them to be shit.

Also, the time system being a limitation IS a legitimate argument. Any game mechanic can be criticized. Honestly I'm shocked more people don't have an issue with it seeing as how everyone is so quick to bitch about "gimmicks". I understand you probably think it's good because it's "dark and edgy" but it really isn't.

You viewing it as some sort of limitation just shows how small-minded you peons really are

The time system makes the whole game just that much more engaging and exciting. If you can't be bothered to even let yourself try to enjoy it beyond the first 1-2 hours then fine, whatever but you're missing out.

They gambled big by adding this sort of thing knowing it would have a big portion of the players shy away from it but it paid off big time. If you can't see that there's no redemption for you

Also nice arguments
>dark and edgy

lmao

MM may fit that category but it has absolutely nothing to do with the time mechanic.
Nice goalposting

What is "engaging and exciting" to one person can also be "stressful and frustrating" to another. I don't find it to be an enjoyable experience. When I play games I don't want to feel like I have a timed to-do list.

unironically Undertale
