Iizuka recently stated customization is limited to make Modern Sonic outshine them. There's also a heavy use of 2D in the game for Modern and Buddy. Some people wanted playable friends back in an S3K style of playing similar to Sonic with their own quirks. It's gonna take more than a half-baked custom character to please our autism.

Much like Batman Arkham did to the fighting genre of open world, it inadvertently killed all momentum in video games
Sonic Unleashed did the same with inventing boosting gameplay, which DID work in unleashed and was fun, but should of stayed to that game alone, now it has plagued all new games, and held the series back.

For what it's worth, I agree with you. "Comfy" has become overused and has lost all sense of the original meaning. The only ones that use it are queers from tumblr and reddit trying to look "hip" to normalfags (who are already using dated terminology and memes), same as faggots like using "salt".
