When it first came out
they ruined it.
people wanted terraria in space. They completely broke the game when it entered beta, they removed all fun in favor of their gimmick main quest adventure, forcing mollygoos grandma persona into the game.

After the entire incident where their maindev got caught luring children on their forums, pedo-relatd shit, the entire game went downhill on a hiatus without development for a long ass time.
When development resumed, which didn't resume until after the legal stuff was over, they shifted direction of the game to some shit that forces you to do a main quest.
multiplayer is pointless, crafting is pointless, exploration is pointless. You're forced to go to specific biomes to scan shit for progressing the main quest.
game is garbage now compared to alpha/beta
Most of the people who actually contributed to Starbound and feel ripped off don't even post on Sup Forums anymore
Starbound is shit, but most of the "omg worst game ever XD" posts are from new folks trying to fit in who have never played the game and know nothing about the development woes that pissed the backers off so badly.

No. They TOOK away most of the game content, replaced it with some grindy shit and added a space station system. It's worse than when it started, though the spacefaring thingy is a bit less retarded now. Too bad it broke all the previous mods so the game can't get fixed.

I still regret buying that game, the space update seemed good but the problem is that is even more repetitive and boring, every "station or shit" in space IS EXACTLY THE SAME FUCKING SHIT is like they run out of presets, fucking terrible
They put up a blogpost about it, but it's all deleted now. I've argued with retards about this topic several times, but there's allways starbound devs shilling in these threads trying to contradict the story.
I pirated it back in the day (mid 2015) and I just recently pirated it again to see what's changed.
Back when it seemed like a blatant terraria clone with worse controls and almost no content or originality just "procedural generation infinite worlds!!!" It also took a long time to develop with long waits between update which added little content giving it a scamstarter vibe and considering terraria was basically finished and was still updating with content patches those who championed Starbound seemed like they were either naive, shilling or (most frequently) just posting to bait terraria players.
Now the game actually has content that feels distinct from terraria, planet hopping isn't just 100% a gimmick and the art style is far less ugly, its not a perfect game by any stretch the controls are still janky and the content progression is far less smooth than terraria's but at this point its at worst a game to be forgotten for its mediocrity rather than something to get mad over but I imagine many who still get mad over it are remembering the old starbound.
TL;DR: Its at worst a mediocre game now but for a while it seemed to be a shitty terraria clone possibly a vapourware scam and people used to make frequent shill and bait threads on Sup Forums to piss off terraria players thats why Sup Forums is "assmad".

Then they wished for a fix on the main issues.
Then they hoped mods would fix it.
Then they shitposted on the forums because mods got broken BECAUSE the devs decided to implement literally the same feature in a less effective way.
Then they just posted memes about how shitty the game was, making fun of each other because they got scammed.
It was tragic, really.
