I think a Microsoft-branded gaming PC is the next logical step. MS can get parts at wholesale and sell at a loss while other PC makers can't.

What is the Xbox? Seriously Microsoft's goal with this isn't to stop making consoles and bring console gamers to the PC.
Look at the way they're going with Windows 10 S, and they've even added this into the main Windows itself.
How long until just like with a console you can only play approved games?
Where even if you can still unlock your system games could refuse to run if the lock wasn't enabled and third-party sourced software disabled.

I for one like Valve's attempt to turn consoles into PCs way more than I like Microsoft's effort to turn PCs into consoles.

Xbox One X will be MS' last console if it doesnt make a profit. After that, they'll either sell off their games division and keep the Xbox name, or just entirely go PC. I mean they already run the OS market, why not just have all the games there too and kill off Sony.

Reminds me of how boring consoles have gotten in recent years. They used to have personality between the shell, hardware, controller, etc. Now they're all just black boxes with PC parts and a super closed OS... Will there ever be another company with the balls to release a purple lunchbox again?

No because that looks like a toy, and now that "gamers" have grown up they think we want something modern that looks slick in the living room, even though everyone I know has consoles in their bedrooms.

Plus in a year or two the most common OS on prebuilt PCs will be Windows 10 S, and unlike the versions of Windows which will cost OEMs money the 10 S rules don't require that those systems be unlocked to allow any OS to be installed. So you may not be able to just install another OS.
