I tried to play through the first level but it was dark and the game play felt like shit. Should I get gmdx or should I try to suffer playing it vanilla

There's a reason why you're struggling, you probably havent leveled up your guns all the way. You need to keep the reticle on the enemy until it slowly shrinks for it to be more accurate too.

Deus Ex is effectively broken up into four chapters:

1. NYC crime noir, until JC betrays UNATCO
2. Hong Kong corporate espionage, until JC gets his killswitch removed
3. Paris underground, until JC reestablishes contact with the Illuminati
4. LA ruins future cowboy apocalypse, until JC deals with Helios

(cut: chapter 5 which would have taken place in DC where JC deals with Mead)

I only mention this because I've been seriously thinking of what it would actually take to make a proper DX sequel, and this is what I keep coming back to.

Always vanilla for your first run. Change to a D3D10 render like Kentie's Launcher. Once you get the Dragon's Tooth Sword, it becomes a lot more fun.

Well, Mead himself is described as an authoritarian bully hated by both sides aka Donald Trump. So, a modern DX game (especially one based around killing Mead or whatever) would be less a future cyberpunk game and more a satire on modern politics.

But hey, JC fucking around in Trump Tower, Trump National Golf Club, Trump International Casino, and the White House itself would be a fun mappack if people still made those.

It sure as fuck isn't everyone's cup of tea but when you're leveling up your skills and learning more details about the world and the characters it hooks you. Soundtrack is also top notch.

I really want to play it but it's so dark that I can't see anything. When I bought it I ran around in total darkness for a good ten minutes before falling off what I believe was a pier into water. At least, that's what I think happened. Are there any mods that just improve the brightness, or any console commands that could do it? As it is it's unplayable.

I don't doubt that, but the problem is that I can't get anywhere in the first level because of how cripplingly dark it is.

Usually games provide ample light so that I don't have to max out my monitor's brightness and bleach my eyes whenever I open anything other than that particular game.

try this renderer, and running without classic lighting. it uses HDR so darker scenes are lighter

There are more ways to defeat bosses in Director's Cut, and the DLC "The Missing Link" is added naturally into the game.

Pretty much, but it's the biggest and best looking one they've ever made. I have mixed feelings about this, there was something incredible about moving on to the next city in deus ex, but a game with that much sprawling content with the tight gameplay design required by the genre just isn't feasible with modern levels of graphical fidelity.
PS turn MSAA off, it doesn't run well on any card.

So I actually made it through the first level and its actually really great. I see that dishonored stole a lot of mechanics from this game. The conspiracy stuff is sweet too.

I have absolutely no idea what in the fuck there is to do in that game for more than 15 hours.

explore, soak in the atmosphere, read all the hacked messages, slowly stealth your way through without the cheap invisibility mod. you were saying it's faster to play through than the fastest recorded time, and completionists averaged 44h, with 30h being the average playthrough so clearly there is something to do.

invisible war is extremely under rated. you can kill everyone the game. it's so good. use the police baton and police the world. the factions are very relevant to modern politics as well which is an added bonus.

i think the dislike for invisible war is firmly justified, the game suffered massively from tiny levels and therefore constant loading screens, and casualized almost everything from ammo to augs, it might not be a completely terrible game by itself but compared to the original it's a joke

It was planned to happen originally too; Known locales unique to the path would have included Texas, the Mexico border, The White House, US Capitol, a Majestic 12 space station (repurposed for the Area 51 bunker), a moon base with rogue AI, and an assault on Vandenberg.

In one of his presentations or like a retrospective on Dx Warren mentioned liberating a FEMA camp too but there's no telling where that would have gone or if they even got it off paper at any stage unlike most of the above.

it doesnt suck, its just a marginal improvement on HR and is clearly holding back on the story so they can make sequels.

making a Deus Ex sequel is hard because if you set it in the future after DX it becomes cheesy hard sci-fi (like invisible war) or if you set it before DX it basically takes place in the present (the Edios Montreal games basically shit on the story)
