I still havent finished it but the elephant "dungeon" was pretty well designed. I'm sure the other beasts are too. And many of the shrines are pretty well done too.

Outside of dungeons, OoT is barebones with barely anything to do. Whereas with BotW, you can hunt deer, foxes, fish, mine ores, tame horses, do korok puzzles, etc.

While its not THE perfect game, it sure is MY perfect game

What it lacks in level design it makes up for in systemic game design. There is no open world game with a exploration cycle as well designed as BotW, since traversal, a key part of the game, is actually fun - climbing, gliding and surfing complement each other really well.

I agree with this. Granted, BotW is my first Zelda game, but it does a good job of setting a waypoint, then putting interesting things along the way that capture my attention. While it isn't traditional level design, it feels really organic and natural to play.

Well, there is a distinction between scripted and systemic game design. Most Zeldas have rather scripted game design, where the interesting stuff comes from triggers and things that the developers set up specifically.

BotW has systemic game design, where the developers throw together a bunch of engines and mechanics, and let the "stories" arrise from that. That's why BotW is such a great exploration game even if the rewards for exploration aren't that exciting - exploration itself is fun, which is a tough sell for people who haven't played the game, because I am aware that it sounds like marketing hogwash.

This one is still my favourite Zelda though.

Dont get too disappointed if you ever try the older Zeldas.. the overworld in the other ones are pretty empty. BotW is very different than the rest, but they are still worth playing for sure.
