does pikachu really look like the one on the right nowadays? I know they use that model of pikachu sometimes for stylized stuff, but in games and in anime, pikachu looks like the middle one still, right?

Gen 2 = Gen 6 > Gen 1 > Gen 3 > Gen 5 > Gen 4 > Gen 7

Gen 1 was a good start. Gen 2 was the peak because they were more structured and were bolstered by the joy of their little pet project becoming a cultural phenomenon. There was a drop in Gen 3 when Nishida became less involved with the art design process after Gen 2, this is clearest in the human character design where Sugimori's personal quirks shine through far brighter, there is also the shift to digital coloring which may be a downer. Gen 4 was a victim of stagnation and easily has the blandest designs, just like how the games themselves are the blandest in the series. Gen 5 was russian roulette with the sheer amount they put in, so it had some pretty good ones and some pretty bad ones. Gen 6 they put their full effort in, being inspired by the new design process of actually making thorough concept art for the Pokemon, designing Pokemon with the big leap into 3D graphics in mind, and they knew Sugimori was stepping out as art director for the next generation, and they managed their peak once more. Gen 7 Ohmura stepped into the art director chair and ruined everything with his terrible approvals and awful official artwork, thankfully he has left Game Freak since SM and you can tell clearly from the art we have seen for USUM someone else has taken over the illustrations.

This is my list as well but I put Gen 5 higher than 3
