The same thing happened with Mexicans and Speedy Gonzalez. Cartoon makers pulled it for being racist. Mexican kids and parents loved the guy for being a good role model, so they brought him back (he's loyal to his friends, handsome, hard working, and always gets the girl, pretty much the mexican ideal).
