does this game get better Sup Forums? i'm right around when you first get to the end of time and i'm not sure i'm gonna finish it. it's pretty cool but active time battle sucks and i'm not really digging it as much as i did dragon quest v.

It's not a very long game, for a JRPG. You might as well finish it. The later parts are some of the best.

if you don't like ATB give chrono cross a try instead. Sup Forumsirgins will tell you cross is bad, and there's a lot of reasons why it would disappoint trigger fans, but all in all it was a better game than trigger. playing it without having played trigger will leave you more open to its good points.

and honestly yeah trigger is a schlep at times.

This game goes pretty cool places for a JRPG. As in the locations that you actively visit during the game, both in terms of art design and storyline context, are pretty fucking cool, and only continue to get better and better as the game goes on.

>active time battle sucks
Holy shit taste

If you're not liking it so far than probably not. Also what is this fucking cover, Marle doesn't learn fire.

Cross was shit you millennial hispter

it's just fucking turn based combat with more waiting around. it's awful.

it's the only somewhat tolerable dweebshit game but yeah that's not saying much

Counterpoint: Cross is The Sith Lords to CT's KOTOR.

Additionally, Skies of Arcadia is the best* spiritual successor to Chrono Trigger, so if you like the first game, play Skies instead of Cross.

*Dark Cloud 2 is the close second

It's really worth finishing.

Shit gets real like 1/3 of the way through when you fight Magus.

Shit gets bananas like 2/3 of the way through which I won't spoil.

>Also what is this fucking cover, Marle doesn't learn fire.
>This shit again
The cover was made when the game was probably in beta stages
Marle used to be a Fire user then

No, no it's not
ATB requires you to pay attention or your enemies will attack you.

Also what speed are you playing in? Check the menu. If you want more of a challenge/faster playing style than up the speed to max in the menu.

You can turn off active time in the DS version and play just turn-based.

I thought everything but the combat was 7/10 and the combat itself was 5/10 at best.
Only positive thing I can think of is that you didn't need to grind as much as other earlier games.

Skies of Arcadia looks more like FF9 and less like CT

Huh. I didn't know that.

The spirit of adventure is the same, though.

max. it's still boring as fuck. it's just turn based combat you can't space out during. that's not preferable imo.

nah, you can change it to "wait," which is not that.

I wonder how much different my life would've been if Marle was the one with Fire Magic and Lucca was the one with Ice.

I'm 30 now, maybe I would've made something of my life

>bringing Marle or Lucca along when Brobot and Froggo exist
You'd still be the damn fool you are now.

I use Marle, Robo & Ayla

Marle is there to cast Haste.

The Haste Helm does the entire job of her. And Ayla? Just admit that you're a multi-generational incest loving pervert. The best kind of pervert!

You have plenty of options at your disposal, especially with all the double/triple techs in the mix.

At this point you're sounding like a dumb contrarian. ATB is far better than some boring turn based shit where you decide all of your characters moves before battle can commence and you just watch like a retard.

Ayla & Robo can ignore ultimate defense enemies with their ability to crack 9999. Granted its something Robo can only do in the DS version.

Ayla is the toughest physical fighter in the party. She can dish out physical damage like nobody's business.

That said my party has always been Crono, Frog and Magus.

Back to bioware forums with you

>ever bringing magus along
fuck that edgy friendless loser with no triple techs

Crono, Robo, and Ayla best combo

>REEEE THOSE OTHER PARTY MEMBERS WERE PUT INTO THE GAME EXCLUSIVELY TO SIDELINE

>especially with all the double/triple techs in the mix

Why the fuck does that matter. You just select what does the most damage overall without being too expensive and still gives you time to heal.

>fuck that edgy friendless loser
He's literally Sup Forums then?

>with no triple techs
He does have some triple techs actually with Marle and Lucca I believe

Crono, Frog and Magus is undoubtedly the coolest party

It doesn't matter in turn based shit either if you wanna go that way.

If you don't like Chrono Trigger you must stop playing video games

>frog and magus
yeah not exactly the best teamup there user
he killed frog's bro and turned him into a green pussy repellent

HAHA!!!

This

Anything with Trunks, Toriyama robot and Launch best team

>Crono, Frog and Magus is undoubtedly the coolest party
least comfy party in the fucking game, considering that edgy faggot killed frog's bro and cursed him for life

there's nothing cool about magus unless you think shadow the hedgehog is cool

>As in the locations that you actively visit during the game, both in terms of art design and storyline context, are pretty fucking cool

That's just the thing though. Almost all of the game's merits are based around style, rather than anything else substantial. Really, a huge part of what seems to make it come off as being better than most JRPGs is that's its more successful at providing you the illusion of freedom than most, though still without actually giving it.

The start of the game gives you a bunch of mini-games off the bat, but that's most of what you get for the whole game. You then get to progress by traveling around and making use of time travel, but for most of the game there is exactly one place to go next to trigger the next event that is needed to advance the story despite the possibility of trying to go elsewhere. You then, near the end, get the ability to make choices and actually affect the ending, and can replay on newgame+ to finish the game at different points, but prior to that you don't actually have the freedom to finish the game early. or otherwise decide how you're going to tackle it and it largely plays out just like most of the genre.

When Glenn changes back he becomes a handsome ass motherfucker though
And he said himself that fighting Magus wouldnt bring Cyrus back

>turned him into a green pussy repellent
Have you seen his tongue? Come on.

>no triple techs
Takes an item slot on someone, but Omega Flare is quite powerful.

Get over it
Magus is the Piccolo of Chrono Trigger. Of course he's cool as fuck.

Crono, Frog and Magus are the definition of comfy bros trio.
Crono the MC with his all around great strength and magic, Frog the sidekick with his Masamune Blade and chivalry, Magus the badass anti-hero with his wide array of spells

It's like you never had a childhood if you don't appreciate such a GOAT-tier party. It's the same as Mario-Bowser-Geno in Super Mario RGP(inb4 some Mallowfaggot rages at me)

chrono trigger is goddamn brilliant and if you don't like it you have bad taste

go read this if you don't believe me (spoilers, obviously):

tl;dr game design matters and CT is good at it

>Almost all of the game's merits are based around style
Back to you pseudo-intellectual trash

Dude, I'm not even saying that this is a completely bad thing, the 'style' it has is exceptionally well polished, but it isn't more freeform nor does it have deeper gameplay than the average JRPG and I don't think you're going to be able to argue against that.

JRPG never have great gameplay(SRPG's/ARPG's are different things).

Chrono Trigger's battle system is fun as fuck and that's what matters. Compare it to other JRPG's where the battles are nowhere near as exciting.

magus is capable of two triple techs, omega flare and dark eternal.

>Chrono Trigger's battle system is fun as fuck and that's what matters.

And that's almost entirely due to 'style'. As you said, "JRPG never have great gameplay".

>JRPG never have great gameplay
I disagree. It's rare, I'll give you that, but it exists. When I play games like SMT: nocturne or breath of fire IV the battle system and battles themselves are the major reason I play. Both of those I feel have excellent turn based combat.
