What happened to JRPGs like this one? Why do we always get literal weebshit these days? I seriously had hope with FFXV, and while it isnt really weebshit its instead an unfinished mess that panders to a "wider audience", which is just as bad.

Because devs rather pander to kissless virgin NEETs. They have 0 standards and buy everything that has animetits in it regardless the quality. Why bother making quality games of you can shit out barebone jrpgs like Neptunia and call it a day.

Nier?

Why is Jansen best boy?

god, i wish those faggot gooks would support the original xbox and 360 more. maybe then, microsoft wouldnt have to rely on halo/forza/gears

just play older games user unless you play jrpgs for graphics. You will realize how much ahead of their time they were.

Too small audience for games like this.
Much easier to do some harem moe loli bait and sell like hot cupcakes

Why does this have to be stuck on the xbox of all places

Hanna's Departure

Because it's the same VA as Knuckles from Sonic Adventure

believe it or not, but there was a time where microsoft actually tried to get good exclusives on their console.

The story about the inn girl and the husband who's family won't accept his wife are top tier feels.

I want to like this game but the localised script is so liberal it's painful to sit through, and it's grindy as fuck.

At least it's BC. I'm enjoying playing it again on my Xbone.

Honestly, I'm amazed at just how bro-tier Jansen turned out to be by the end of the game

This game was really cool. I wish I could play it again, but... No XBox 360.

Those long stories were actually really well written. I'd usually not give a damn, but they were genuinely interesting.

>make game with realistic and older characters, a more serious tone overall and a story thats actually interesting and isnt about some emo fuccboi saving the world from some jpop villain
>it bombs

>make a mediocre cheap game about some loli slut saving the world from another lolislut and while saving the world they meet other moe waifubait characters
>it sells like hotcakes plus you can sell it on Steam as well for extra money

The JRPG genre is dead.

It's only gonna get worse from here. Xeno series got fucked too.

>people actually thought Nintendo's acquisition of Monolithsoft would do anything but have the latter be contractually obligated to churn out cheap garbage forever
Press ふ to pay respects.

>loli slut
wut game

All of them. At least these days.

...

You can tell how fucked this genre is when even former fans can universally agree that it's shit now.

>NieR, Lost Odyssey, Last Remnant, Resonance of Fate
>all flops

>FFXIII
>spawns 2 sequels that each sold respectably

I have never been more upset and disgusted about anything vidya related besides the fact that FFXIII actually had fans who loved the games and defended them religiously.

>tfw phantasy star is known as a mmo now

>Resonance of Fate

I forgot about this game. Maybe with all the shit SEGA is porting to PC this game will come back

brand sells
The next FF could be worse than FF14 1.0 and it would still sell as long as they hype it up enough

>Yasumi Matsuno not allowed to make a big budget game ever again
>Neptunia games get shat out every year and only grow in popularity

That was my childhood defining game.

I still go back and play it every year or so.

>it isn't really weebshit

KEK!

The fun part is that I really don't need to write anything to say that you're wrong about that.

Last gen Microsoft actually tried to get Japan to buy their console, there was a lot of japanese games exclusive to the X360 like Blue Dragon, Tales of Vesperia, Star Ocean 4 and even the first Idolmaster.

Of course, some of them were ported to the PS3 a few years later.

Nowadays Microsoft already gave up on Japan.

I wish they would just give up on Xbox.

why? they made one bad console and even then its slowly getting better anyways

the funeral

Hate to agree with this gag, but he has a very good point.

Japanese guys are obsessed with idol and moe garbage and it's starting to seep into the western versions of games.

>why?
Probably because he's a sony fanboy who thinks sony should monopolize console marker

>RoF is going to die together with the 360 and PS3

>Lost Odyssey
>Not weebshit
It's a FF clone with Inoue doing the character designs, are you fucking kidding me?

Also daily reminder
>Monolithsoft has no plans to make big budget games like Xenogears ever again
>stuck with Xeno Art Online
>people fell for the "Takahashi has more creative freedom under Nintendo" meme
Enjoy your seasonal LNs bros!

Better than what we have today.

>Better than what we have today.
No it's not, and only a fucking EOP would say this.
Lost Odyssey is generic trash that only Xbros praise because it was one of the few japanese exclusives on the 360, and not even a good one when you had Culdcept Saga, it's literally the Xbros' gateway to JRPGs.

name a better turn-based JRPG that came out last gen

This game bored me on so many levels. Tried many times to pick it back up just to be put to sleep.

TLR and RoF were the best JRPGs last year.

>name a better turn-based JRPG that came out last gen

Lost Odyssey bombed? I know it didn't do amazingly well, but I thought it recouped, at least.

I'm surprised. It's one of my favorite games.

>Lost Odyssey is generic trash
Motherfucker, the 1,000 Years of Dreams had some of the finest writing in the entire JRPG genre

Metal Max 4
SaGa Scarlet Grace
SMTIV:A
End of Eternity AKA Resonance of Fate
Oreshika 2
Natural Doctrine
The Last Remnant

All vastly better than that outdated, generic, cinematic pile of garbage that isn't even a RPG.

Doesn't change the fact that LO was essentially the swansong of turn-based JRPGs, everything seems to be going in the ATB direction and it genuinely felt like a ps2 era game with modern graphics in that regard.

and RoF is really unique in regards to combat, I wouldn't lump it in with every other JRPG on the market, and this is coming from someone that absolutely loved the game

>Lost Odyssey PC never
>No Lost Odyssey 2
>Not even a Lost Odyssey remaster

Fuck this gay earth

>Lost Odyssey
>Generic trash

Lol. Take your console war shit and fuck your own loose asshole with it.

Now this nigga has good taste.

All Saggygooch's games last gen were crap. I can appreciate his attempts at throwbacks, but that doesn't instantly make them good.

I don't even care much about Xeno since the Wii one was perfectly self contained and didn't need any sequels while the WiiU one is meh.
What I'm most mad about is that Monolith's planned sequels to DBZ Attack of the Saiyans, a JRPG for DS, got axed because of the buyout.
They wanted to adapt all of DBZ, with next game being based around Namek arc.
For those that don't know, it was an extremely good JRPG with Mario RPG-like timed hits/blocking system, very fluid animations and rather well made everything really.
It even had music composed by Masuko, the composer of the NES, SNES and PS1 SMT games.

What the fuck are you even on about?
>>It’s almost like Matrix basically where you can really immerse yourself in the world and live in that world. I feel like myself included, that might be kind of like the ultimate form of interactive entertainment.
>>I do have that vision that that’s the ultimate place, and I want to keep going. That’s why I create big games, and I would like to keep going until I can’t anymore.

The man has his head in the right place. And a character designed by Tetsuya Nomura? Good. He single handedly created every iconic character Square has and single handedly made kingdom hearts what it is today. Shit on it however much you want, threads on Sup Forums has minimal shit posting and fans lose their minds over it. The fanbase isn't even as autistic as the sonic fanbase.

FF just sells on brand recognition, and nothing else. Idiots will never learn. There are people out there who pretend XIII and XV were good.

>weebshit
What the fuck does that even mean? That the game has anime artstyle? Persona 5 shat on any Jrpg in the last decade quality wise so what? Or you are that kind of person who needs "muh mature realistic graphics for mature gamers such as myself"?.

Or do you seriously believe that the niché low budget harem games designed to sell 30k copies are the reason why we don't have more realistic looking Jrpgs?

>He single handedly created every iconic character Square has
Amano designed all the FF characters up to and including 6, Nomura did 7, 8, 10, 13 and Versus designs for the 4 main characters only which were later redesigned by Ferrari who did the character artwork for the game.

tl;dr Nomura didn't single handedly create every iconic Square character, far from it you cockmuncher.

weeb has lost all meaning

Lost Odyssey was truly the last good JRPG.

RIP.

I dont understand the love for Lost Oddesy. Shit battle system, shit voice acting, the most cringy cutscenes I've ever seen in a video game. The one and only thing the game had going for it was the written stories you could read.

I know, it's fucking obvious just from how old the series is. But I knew you'd stick your head in your ass and scream like the fucking ass faggot you are if I said he did. Because fuck Nomura am I right?

>cringy

Undertale was okay

Guess I gotta play Metal Max 4 if it can be listed among the rest of those games. You're a cool guy nigga.

Mistwalker is a great studio. Microsoft funded their studio, they should make something for them again

I need to buy The Last Stor for Wii, but it really got expensive now.

>Their next game is another Terra Battle

Lost Odyssey is the pinnacle of modern-classic JRPGs. It doesn't do anything new or innovative, but it sticks to the timeless JRPG formula and does it incredibly well. It hits high notes in every area that counts; the characters are all endearing and the story is interesting the whole way through. The music is absolutely fantastic. The art direction is captivating; the characters and the world they inhabit are wonderfully realized. The battle system doesn't break new ground, but it's functional, fun, and always entertaining, helped along with interesting enemy designs and some really amazing bosses. It's the perfect example of how to make a turn-based JRPG, and I'm sad that we don't get more games like it. I've played more JRPGs than any other genre and Lost Odyssey is easily within the top 10.

It's a shame Mistwalker only makes mobile games now. To be fair, Terra Battle is actually pretty interesting as far as mobile games go, but I'd love to see them work on another console project. Sakaguchi doesn't want to work on big projects anymore, though.

some of their staff also left for SE sadly

It's not worth the money.

>the story is interesting the whole way through
>The art direction is captivating

wat

MS still managed to sell 1.6 million 360s in japan, compared to 500 or so xbones lol

>the last remnant

I got this for $1 on steam and I still feel ripped off. How can you possibly think this is better than Lost Odyssey?

Fuck you nigga, Inoue is one of the few respectable artists in manga

Played it but who cares about the cancelled sequel of a mediocre RPG about Kai honestly

LO was a great game. Anyone who says differently is a fucking faggot.

Oh boy another casual.

Let's be real. RoF was fun for one playthrough but it literally had no strategy to it. All you had to do was run in one direction while jamming the fire key and land in cover and then do the same thing with the next guy.

It doesn't deserve much attention or a sequel and if it weren't for the hex system and crazy guns that are not necessary at all, it would have been boring as fuck.

Because everything that is garbage and bad for consumers started when microsoft entered the race starting with their paid online and getting worse every year thanks to them.

Nothing they have ever done has helped any industry they choose to be a part of.

>Buy a used 360 just to play Lost Odyssey again
>Play for the whole day, happy AF
>Welp, time for bed, turn 360 off
>The next morning CD drive turns out to be dead
I just want to play the damn game, fuck

it was given away for free a few months back

should have gotten the digital version breh

>Nothing they have ever done has helped any industry they choose to be a part of.
>original xbox was the first console to have a hard drive
Checkmate.

The problem with The Last Remnant is that so much of the content is locked away. By the time you assemble the party you want you're already at the end of the game; there's nothing left to do it and there's little reason to train your units, aside from autism.

>Do every single quest in the game
>Take all the time to get Khrynia, Hinnah, and Hannah, who I had been wanting to use since the start of the game
>Oh wait, there's hardly anything left to do now so these characters are massively underleveled and there's no reason to train them
It's like in other JRPGs where you spend dozens of hours to obtain the ultimate weapon only for there to be literally nothing to do with it. With The Last Remnant you're stuck using the shitty units the entire game, and by the time you get the units you want there's no reason to even have them anymore.

Fucking moot

>but it sticks to the timeless JRPG formula
What the fuck does this even mean? There's no such thing as a JRPG formula.
>the characters are all endearing and the story is interesting the whole way through
It's generic FF tripe from the beginning to the end, making your party the center of the world and making everything revolving around them
>The music is absolutely fantastic
It's one of Uematsu's weakest works, even he doesn't give a damn about it in his concerts.
>The art direction is captivating
It's generic 80's artsy fantasy on the same vein of stuff like Guin Saga, people only praise it because the characters were designed by Inoue.
>the characters and the world they inhabit are wonderfully realized.
The characters are the same pretentious, flat cliches you can find in games like FF or Tales of, don't kid yourself. The world itself is dead and doesn't have anything interesting going on, especially because the game is linear as fuck. None of the places you visit have any significat lore outside of the main story, they could have made the game a corridor like FFXIII and nothing would have changed because any place you visit is just a proxy for the next piece of the the main quest to come in and flood you with inane dialogues, if you take any location outside of the context of the main quest they're floating islands in a sea of nothing.
>The battle system doesn't break new ground, but it's functional, fun, and always entertaining
If you find a generic, barebones battle system from the 90's fun.
>It's the perfect example of how to make a turn-based JRPG
It's a perfect example of how to make a commercial bomb, which Sakaguchi seems used to. Nobody cares about playing a clone of the same shallow games they played in the 90's, there's a lot of good reasons why LO bombed.
>I've played more JRPGs than any other genre and Lost Odyssey is easily within the top 10.
That tells more about how little you actually played than Lost Odyssey's supposed qualities.

>FF clone
The Mistwalker guys made FF to begin with
The only people SE even have left are people like Nomura, who did little more than design chars with lots of belts

>LO
>Interesting story

The final boss and his ambitions was shit.

>tfw the guy responsible for most of JRPG's gayest most retarded character designs was put in charge of several games

this reality was a mistake

While I mostly agree, Lost Odyssey had one glaring issue.
Character visual design was
SO
FUCKING
UNINSPIRING
They all feel dull to watch. Have to admit that while Final Fantasy series ended up as a garbage, their character design was top-notch. You remember how these characters look.
Meanwhile LO cast is just bland and generic (visual-wise).
Still, LO is fantastic. It sweetened my choice of Xbone which kinda locked me away from most of jRPGs. Still, glad that I get this instead of animetrash.

LO's short stories were a 10/10
LO's actual story was a 3/10
i dont know why the fuck they didnt hire the writer who did the short stories to do the actual plot, we could have been looking at the most incredible storytelling

Lost Odyssey was a lost cause. 15 discs of mediocrity with nothing original.

This bait was already used in this thread, user

>I like mature games for mature people like myself

It bombed because it was a 360 exclusive.

>The Mistwalker guys made FF to begin with
The Mistwalker guys are a ragtag group of former random Square employees, none of them have made any significant contribution to FF other than Sakaguchi, most of the people who actually did shit for FF is either still in Squenix or went on to make other companies like Grezzo, Mistwalker's teams are no names.
>The only people SE even have left are people like Nomura
And Kitase, Tokita, Kawazu, Tanaka and so on, reducing Squenix to Nomura just to fellate a studio of nobodies is pretty dumb, especially when even in the disgraceful and pathetic state they're in now they manage to make better games than anything Mistwalker came up with.

>bait

Point out on thing it did that was unique.

>someone states that he likes mature games more than some kiddie shit, which is perfectly normal if you get older
>HAHA WHAT A LOSER I BET HE JUST ACTS LIKE THIS TO FEEL MATURE!

That would work if LO had anything actully mature in it and wasn't the usual shonenshit tripe with older looking characters.

I would say JRPGs as a genre are pretty standard. The coating that goes around the basic structure of a JRPG is largely what's so good about it. I thought the characters, story, gameplay (5 characters in battle, learning system, timing system, etc.) felt familiar but fun again in the context of the game.

What about it do you think is so bland compared to other JRPGs?

>tfw Microsoft made Lost Odyssy backwards compatible and gave it to everyone for free to celebrate 300 backwards compatible games.

Is it me or do these character designs look like they would fit right in the Final Fantasy 10 world?

Didn't 360 have a bunch of JRPG exclusives?

At least the otaku support the games they like. Unlike fedora wearing supreme gentlemen who only whine and never buy and support games they like.
