It's not that they choose a mate based on looking like their mother, but it's true that they generally look for motherly traits in a female because it signals that she'd make for a good mother and the single point of our existence is to breed and pass on our genes. If you associate motherly traits with a certain look, it's possibly that it may play into how you choose a mate.

You grow up believing your parents are perfect and the ideal, after all they are the ones that raise and teach you. So yes it is true, but you sooner or later start to see the cracks and their faults. If your mom was an arsehole you would probably seek someone who looked entirely different even if your mom was gorgeous.
