Ubuntu driver support is trash with any hardware that isn't really common
Someones been posting a lot about using Ubuntu, so I don't think this is a joke
Stock Ubuntu is abandoning its precious Unity desktop in favor of Gnome.
>using anything other than xfce
Because nobody uses open source API so playing video games without directx is dead.
A lot of software I use only works on Windows or runs poorly on Linux. That's it really.
Because nothing ever works properly on Linux unless you spend 1000 hours trying to find a workaround
Because I want to play games, not mine crypto
>using anything other than KDE
Because most of the games and programs I use are on Windows 7.
I don't use Windows, I use Mac.
Video games.
You no longer need to choose between bloat and bugs, now you can get both in one beautiful package!
2010 called, they want you back.
What does xfce offer over mate?
I admit Linux works better on my PC but since i play alot of video i barely use the dual boot
...
Because Video games and I'm used to the OS.
Still using Win 7, and actually debating the jump into Win 10.
I don't have a linux bf
LXDE used to be cool but the dev drank the Qt Kool-aid.
>implying Qt isn't vastly superior to GTK

Ubuntu provides specific repositories of nonfree software, and Canonical expressly promotes and recommends nonfree software under the Ubuntu name in some of their distribution channels. Ubuntu offers the option to install only free packages, which means it also offers the option to install nonfree packages too. In addition, the version of the kernel, included in Ubuntu contains firmware blobs.
Ubuntu's trademark policy prohibits commercial redistribution of exact copies of Ubuntu, denying an important freedom.
Because Linux games are horse shit.
because the nvidia driver has extreme screen tearing and i haven't figured out how to fix it
dont do it.
stick with 7.
there's a reason that Windows 7 still dominates the marketshare, despite being 2 generations old, and not officially sold since 2011.
because Windows 8 and Windows 10 are garbage. Windows 10 especially.
it spies on you, reports back to microsoft, and in general, is designed as user unfriendly as possible so that you are forced to use Cortana (they removed the search function), since cortana sends your info back to microsoft
you can't disable the botnet spy features, and you can't choose not to install updates or even choose which ones to install. You will get all your updates and like it, or it will forcibly install them anyway. You can't postpone them indefinitely either. after long enough the computer will auto restart to install updates.
it's got advertisements on the start menu too, because we needed that.
And Microsoft resorted to really scummy underhanded tactics to force people to upgrade to 10. By means such as making the x button on the upgrade notification act as a confirmation, meaning many people unwittingly upgraded against their wishes.
in general, Windows 10 exists solely to sell your info to advertisers.
That's a good thing

you can disable the botnet on 7 by deleting specific updates and disabling certain options.
Sure it takes some knowhow, but it's doable. 10 doesn't let you at all.
Are the variants of Ubuntu like Lubuntu or whatever bad as well? Tbh I'm a casual so when I'm switching to Linux I could use something entry level.
>literally "my shitty version of a literally-who knockoff OS is better than yours: the thread."
ubuntu budgie is cool. when ubuntu switches over to gnome it should be pretty cool too if you install the dash to panel extension
Windows 10 is just running Windows32 stuff virtualized with a compatibility layer now just like you would on Linux. Its only real advantage is that its better for D3D11 stuff but Wine is better for D3D9 and below and is getting up to par pretty quickly.
People have just started being able to run GTA5 on the RadeonSI driver and the latest dev version.
By the time Microsoft drops Windows7 and win32 support Wine will probably be the best way to go regardless of platform, just like DOSbox is for really old stuff.
Use Xubuntu. XFCE is lightweight, easy to use and has great customizability. GNOME is also a prefered choice for some but it may take some time getting used to coming from Windows.
Supposedly Ubuntu is going to include a bunch of extensions by default, with Dash to Dock being one of them, though even if they don't extensions.gnome.org is super easy to use.
It's free of the canonical shit, right?
Yes, use Debian instead.

To play Gears 4
I used Linux (Ubuntu, Arch and Gentoo) for years before switching back to Windows 7. It's a good OS but games just werk on Windows, it's a lot easier to pirate for, and you can get a pretty good facsimile of the terminal if you're inclined to that sort of thing. When I build a proper computer I'll probably do that PCI passthrough thing. Or just get a second hard drive.
I remember being an edgy teen too.
>ubuntu user feeling superior in any way
my lappy has been Mint for like two years now
>asking people why they use windows on a video games board
imagine if you made an operating system out of Unity. that's why.
>babbys first non MS operating system
My first non-Windows was OS X 10.0 (Cheetah). It's a shame Apple ruined OS X with 10.7 (Lion). Snow Leopard was their greatest achievement.
>Snow Leopard was their greatest achievement.
Agreed. Apple shot themselves with the foot by trying to adding iOS shit to OS X.
My breaking point was Mavericks and Yosemite.
>I-It's too hard ;(
what a gay
crunchbang masterrace reporting in also is that way
Because my edgy Linux phase was over in middle school. During college I ran Linux in a VM for access to GNU utilities and the like, but since Ubuntu is on Windows now there's no longer any reason to use the Linux kernel on a laptop.
I really wish i was a paranoic fuck who think evil organizations are trying to take over the world to care for all that distro shit.
>Using an OS that most devs ignore
>Going out of my way to make Linux work
>Not a pajeet coder
Why the fuck would I do that?
no you cant lol
It's not even that it's hard, it's that it's a hassle if you want to pray gaemu. There's a lot of things to like about Linux but its ability to easily play Windows games is not one of them
I am not retarded.
Because Linux can't open .exes

I like games
>Using GNU/Linux while running windows in a VM to play games
This is the patricians way.
Because I like videogames.
I don't. Fedora 26 just werks. All the games I need are on PS4.
>it's that it's a hassle if you want to pray gaemu
Works exactly the same as Windows, install the game, and run it. Or if its on Steam you install Steam and then install and run it through Steam. What's so hard about that?
>its ability to easily play Windows games is not one of them
Why would you expect an OS to easily run applications written for another OS? Even on Windows you have to use compatibility layers or emulators if you want to run software created for another system.
Have you tried to run Linux games on Windows? I doubt it would even work beyond command line stuff, last I knew its GNU/NT mode couldn't support any of the standard 3d acceleration.
>you almost fell for the Arch maymay
Dodge a bullet.
>Linux games
Not him.
There are Linux only games? Legit curious.
Oh you betcha
Woah...
Why is... Windows so behind.
Woah.

installing things on Windows:
>run exe and follow steps
installing things on linux
>search Google for the commands to pull from repos
>add repositories to your sources because it couldn't be found
>run commands given by old threads
>commands not compatible with your distro
>search for official wiki and find 25 step guide
>shit loads of dependencies installed
>when it comes to uninstalling you're left with random as fuck packages everywhere
Awful
Because once I actually learned how it works, I prefer it to most every other OS.
The generic, soulless, royalty free music is an oddly fitting soundtrack to the generic, soulless, royalty free gameplay.
Because everything just works with it and I don't see any advantage to using a meme OS that just apes 99% of Windows anyway.
You can disable the reporting and updates with local group policies if you want. Hell I'm pretty sure you can disable the reporting without them anyways.
I don't know what you mean by start menu ads because I haven't ever seen any.
>Because Linux can't open .exes
Unfortunately Microsoft themselves is phasing out exe files in favor of their new UWP format. Windows 10 S, which will soon be the most prevalent OS on new prebuilt desktops.
Like it or not Wine might be the thing to use soon for legacy Windows games even on Windows.
If Linux was supported in gayming and was easy to install it would explode
t.prophet prophetorus
Windows 10 S won't be prevalent at all, stop spreading misinformation
It will only be on shity surface computers
>unity
>gnome
>ubuntu
ugh, fucking T R A S H
at least use arch or something you faggot
There aren't many Linux exclusive games, but there are a few games now that have Vulkan support which is exclusive on Linux as the Windows versions are stuck with Direct3D 11.
>Why do you still use Windows?
Cause im not gay and have a mainstream non gay job unlike you.
There's a lot of Linux shitposting lately thanks bored Sup Forums summerfags, but to be honest, the reason I won't switch to Linux is literally fucking video games.
Once Gaben loses all the fat, somebody kicks the pajeet CEO from MS in the ass and free OSes with decent GUI become the standard, I'll happily choose a nice distro for myself.
>installing things on windows
>run exe, don't have vc2012/dx8/vb redists, have to manually download and install them
>finally install them and their pre-requisites, run program
>literally any modern linux distro
>install program
>oh, you don't have dependencies, those are installed with it
>run program
The methods are similar, all that's different is that Linux automates it natively, where as Windows, programs like Steam have to automate gathering dependencies.
I use Windows over Linux because of reasons but fuck be fair nigger
>Windows 10 S, which will soon be the most prevalent OS on new prebuilt desktops.
10S is made to be equivalent to something like a chromebook. It's not at all designed for widespread desktop usage. That's what Windows 10 Home is for.
>It will only be on shity surface computers
That's Windows users current hope, but much like the "Microsoft will never make a Windows that is locked to the Windows Store!" claims of a few months ago its going to turn out to be a false one.
Microsoft is going to offer Windows 10 S to OEMs for $0 in order to finally give the OEMs what they've wanted for a long time.
Their plan is that the majority of users will stay with the lock to the Store, with the few users that aren't being placated by being able to purchase $50 DLC from the store to unlock the ability to install third party legacy software.
Microsoft's belief is that they'll make more money off of Windows distributed this way than they did off of the money they've been making off of selling Windows to OEMs and they're almost certainly correct.
Name a single application that doesn't come with the redists. They're literally called redistributables
Windows 8 S wasn't even fucking prevalent, most people don't know it exists unless you search for it online. Stop being a fucking retard.
10 S is replacing Home. That's why 10 S is going to have Pro DLC but no Home DLC has been announced.
>literally any modern linux distro
>install program
This never ever happens. If your program isn't in the default repos this never ever happens and you will always need some fucking wiki to install.
>By the time Microsoft drops Windows7 and win32 support Wine will probably be the best way to go regardless of platform, just like DOSbox is for really old stuff.
Then I'll switch over to Linux IF that happens. Right now, I've not encountered very few problems with Windows 7. It's like learning dvorak keyboard layout. Sure, after a hundred hours of practice, my WPM might go up a bit, but I don't need that extra boost, and I don't want to waste the hours learning. Same applies to Linux. I have to relearn everything for almost no benefit to my needs.
So then it's not different from Linux then is it :^)
Funny thing, a lot of older DLLs on Windows weren't redistributable, or aren't available today with licenses that allow that. Many of those games getting distributed now for Windows include versions of those libraries from Wine.
>he honestly uses arch
I have 550 games on Steam. Only 220 of them work on Linux.
Oh yeah, because googling a webpage that says "copy and paste this into your terminal" which will then install the the repository, dependencies, and program is so fucking hard, right?
Basically what you're telling me is you've never actually used linux, and/or are just fucking retarded.
