State of games

Atmosphere is, we'll all agree, the most important thing a video game can have, it's the draw. It's more important than gameplay, sound design, level design because it supersedes them, it takes from each and builds the final experience.

Back in the day we had lots of technological limitations that - by sheer luck - built upon the atmosphere. We had wonky animations, papier mache low poly faces, awkward pronounciations of text that produced the end result that was often a labor of love and sometimes something transcending the mere sum of its parts.

We need to go back to more abstract graphical era. It will never happen in big budget games where you have to have hitler youth bearded hipster fighting mocapped hordes so indies are our only hope.

I have nothing to add to your thread but I just wanted to thank you for the chuckle I got reading your post and imagining David Lynch shouting every word of it.

vidya crash when?

technology should have stopped at the ps2 era

>Atmosphere is, we'll all agree, the most important thing a video game can have
No we all won't agree to that. Because that's the most stupid thing I've seen today and I refuse to believe Sup Forums is stupid enough to believe something like that

Dark Engine was the optimal art design engine

Though it;s about competence. Troika made VtMB (talking about aesthetics, not the buggy mess of a game) in fucking Source.

Is this a 90s snapshot thread?

Never. Same with capeshit. Consumer hordes give money to facecam people, to ecelebs paraphrasing Sup Forums threads, deadbeat 90s designers, cult leaders like Chris Roberts, creativelly bankrupt devs like Obisidian and others, over and over and over again. Someone might crash and PROBABLY not get money again like Inafune and Nu Male Sky crew but they'll just finance another scheme.

>put the gun down baby me and mommy are just having a little talk

Name a game that functions based on mechanics alone. Unless you're one of those autistic rhythm games people.

Everything you're asking for is already available, with modern technology.

I would say Aurora or Dwarf Fortress although you could put your own story into it.

Just because a game has/needs atmosphere doesn't make it the most important part of a game faggot. You need all 6 elemants of ideal food. But they're not equally important for your health

>Your hair will never look as good as David Lynch's lovely locks

Everything about this is wrong.

Different games play off of different elements and use some better than others. Atmosphere is important and is what ends up leaving a lasting impression and memory of the game, but it may not necessarily be what made the game good.

In the thumbnail, I thought that thing behind the ketchup and yellow sauce was some kind of deformed head with its mouth open

Her parents were ugly as fuck yet they produced her.

Nice retort

Balloon fight
Joust
Robotron 2084
Super mario bros
Excitebike

Game play >>> pretentious atmosphere

>Joust
Troll infested, bubbling pits of lava definitely count as atmosphere
