Siren 1 and 2. They're clunky, but once you get into them, become extremely spooky.

I'm sorry user. Horror genre is dead. Kids who watch youtube celebs killed it.

Siren 1 is way too hard. It becomes annoying and not scary when you have to memorize a level to even try to beat it.

...

This.

I'm fucking dying for new horror. Even the old standby of Japanese RPGmaker games is starting to fail me. The releases are beginning to thin out.

The whole "you're powerless and a big scary thing is chasing you" meme killed the genre. Fuck Amnesia. It even ruined otherwise good horror games like Alien: Isolation and Resident Evil 7.

ywhat is your take on horror? Third person view with unlimited ammo?

RE7 wasn't that bad, at least it was a step in the right direction.

Silent hill is probably the best example of a horror where you can defend yourself, while being weak.

No, just include numerous vulnerable enemies and give me some weapons even if they're weak or the ammo is scarce, like Silent Hill or a good Half Life horror mod.

I also like exploration, and in the games I'm complaining about (Amnesia, Outlast, etc) exploration ALWAYS takes a backseat (and so does the level design) because it's more about making mazes with places to hide from the BIG SPOOKY MONSTER than it is about making places that are interesting/scary to explore or look around in.

But Ayyy and RE7 were good, you jaded fuck

The Evil Within, you can get it + DLC for cheap on steam right now.

Horror games need good atmosphere
levels designed for running and hiding from invincible monsters are never good.

Sure thing, OP.

Man I can not find a good way to play SH2. If I emulate, I either have to play in 480p or deal with the CGI cutscenes being fucked up where I can't see what's going on. The PC version is glitchy and any of the small cutscenes will freeze after one animation.

I didn't say they weren't. just that Amnesia meme design detracted from them.

Better atmosphere

Let's get one thing straight, in this day and age only first person will cut it for true horror. There is absolutely nothing scary about the third person view anymore. But yes I agree that the setting should be really done well with the story. I couldn't care less about fighting mechanics in horror so long as ammo is scarce

What are the point of these games? Why do you deliberately want to feel fear? I never got the horror genre, someone illuminate on why you like it.

Life.

Obviously we want to feel fear. Immersion in a setting in which we'd likely never experience first hand makes for a great game.

That's also what made pt so great. It focused on things that could happen to any of us such as familicide. Games that tug on your psychological strings making you question your every move is true horror.

First person horror may be what's needed, but ironically SH2 is the gold standard for horror story telling.

It's more about submerging yourself in an atmosphere, diving into a world of illogical and the catharsis of overcoming and feeling catharsis once you overcome the fear you have felt.

It's all about immersion. If you can't feel it, then maybe this genre isn't really for you.

It is exhilarating when horror is done just right that the overwhelming sense of dread accelerates the heartrate or otherwise elicits a deeply biological and primal response.

...

Immersion exactly, which is why RE7 vr gives me hope for the future of vr horror gaming and horror in general

Immersion isn't exclusive to horror although it's a probably a feature that's most needed in the genre, but I guess I'll take you guys word for it that you want to feel some primal fear or dread. If anything you would train your fight instead of flight since you all are able to finish those games.

That Yeti hunting game looks pretty ok actually.

That's funny, because I find SH3 to be the dullest game in the franchise. The overuse of the grunge aesthetic really dulls any tension the game has.

I liked the Slender game at first, then it got repetitive as hell.

On the contrary, I found SH3's world the most... aggressive one. Its use of warm colours made even some of the "outside" you see in the church feel repulsing.

Speaking of SH why did they try to continue the series after 3? Heather killed god and the nightmare is over, not much room to go from there.

when is scorn coming out?

Because they still had to make the best Silent Hill game.

Milk the series for money.
A plausible answer is the lingering effects the town might have on people with darkness in their hearts.

In my headcanon Silent Hill will always be the same way it was in 2, a town which forces people to confront their innermost demons. Whether they survive is up to them.

>still no current gen console port
>PC versions don't handle fog as well as the PS2
>can't emulate the PS2 versionf SH2 because the FMV's don't work

Out of all the HD remasters, it had to be SH 2&3 that they fucked up.

Did you finsih pathologic ? Because nothing has surpassed it yet.

Is it even possible to make a good horror game that doesn't rely on jump scares ?

Evil Within

Oh hai Mark!

>good

I dont know whether I should give it a chance or not, heard that was rough.

Wasnt Silent Hill a resort town built on top some sort of "sacred place"? I guess it could still make some sense if even after the god died some spiritual powers would still linger, even if The Order has nothing to do with it anymore.

That "God" was Alessa's/Claudia's impression of what "God" is. Every "otherworld" is born of strong emotions of people. Hatred in Alessa's case, self-hatred in SH2 and desire to see mother for Walter.

Third personnis not scary. Stop this meme. We're past it and likely will never go back.

Part of me wishes that they could remake the original trilogy, but then people would likely shoot it down like they did the RE7 demo.

Is Siren 2 playable without haven played the first one? I wanted to try Siren 1 but all I've heard people say about it is how ridiculously hard it is.

Every game that came after 4 has been hot garbage, at this point the best we can hope for is that they let the series die in peace instead of raping its corpse.

>heard that was rough
It's indeed "rough", but it's well worth the playthrough. Some environments are great, the plot is interesting and it has the best villain in the series.

Yes, you'd only miss some small references. It's not like anyone would be able to understand the plot on their first playthrough anyway.

Still, I'd say try the first game with a guide. It becomes a much smoother ride.

Amnesia itself is good though. Not its fault that it become favorite tool for let's play cancer.

horror is an illusion

Jump scares can be fine as long as they're not overused. SH2 as far as I can remember barely used any if at all.

A true horror game gnaws at your deepest fear making you paranoid. The last time I truly felt that was when I was playing P.T.

how was outlast 2?

Trash, just like the first one.

It was getting shit on a lot, which I don't get. It's pretty much the same game as the first.

What are you a fucking psychologist? Retard.

I'm going to start Crimson butterfly, I hope it is good,

Not really that scary. I still haven't beaten it, but the story is interesting. Evil cults in movies and games has always been a soft spot for me. But they cpuldnt make this scary.

>can't emulate the PS2 versionf SH2 because the FMV's don't work
But they do? Just enable "Switch to 4:3 ratio when a fmv plays" option from GS Core settings in PCSX2. Played the intro a few days ago. Was smooth as butter.

I wish RE7 was a bit more like 3, like you have a few regular enemies around so you can actually shoot something once in a while but then you have the invencible enemy you have to run away from (even thought you could kill Nemesis but whatever).

>I still haven't beaten it
Did you get to the part with raining blood? That shit was atmospheric af

Ignore ANY idiots who say Evil Within, it's not scary and the "story" is by far one of the worst... Even worse than shit like RE5.

OP: Try Uncanny Valley for a silent hill vibe and some FUCKED up endings, RE7 is fun until it goes RE with the monsters, if you like Half Life Mods Afraid of Monsters (title?) Was damn good, as well as They Hunger 1 and 2. Have fun!

The cursed forest is a pretty good horror game. Hraphics are amazing as well.

Nope, looking forward to it.
But my favorite parts of the games have been the paranormal events.

Level design is worse than the first, during chase scenes you have no idea where to go and rely on trial and error. There is one enemy who literally has wallhack, but thankfully you don't encounter her much during the story. Seriously, Martha's bullshit. I heard they patched her, so maybe it's better now.

First game's length was perfect. It ended right when I got bored of it. I can't say that about 2. A lot of it feels like it's useless padding and hiding got real boring during the forest section.

Story is more serious, doesn't really have that campy B-movie vibe first game had, though I'd say I liked it more. The twist is kind of clever that is, that MC DIDN'T actually kill the girl, though it doesn't actually affect the main story. Ending is End of Evangelion-tier, though it kinda made sense once you read into the plot and some analyses people made and turn on the microphone during the last scene.

I'd say I enjoyed it slightly less than the first game and it definitely outlasted its welcome. I'd say give it a try/pirate.

Look up Chzo Mythos OP. You might like it.

>Uncanny Valley
Never heard of that, is this it?
store.steampowered.com/app/359580/Uncanny_Valley/

Who is this faggot?

how scary is SH2? I never got the chance to play it and I'm a huge pussy when it comes to horror
most I can handle is RE4 levels of horror because it's more action oriented

The guy that was put in charge of the SH2&3 ports, he also worked on Downpour

nothing short of a genius

the producer for multiple american SH games and the man responsible for the HD collection

The worst thing anout Outlast 2 is that it stops getting scary fast after you constantly keep getting killed at certain spots. That praying lady that everybody in game is so scared of is more annoying than scary.

More like don't listen to this retard. Evil within was awesome and has a more interesting story than most other games especially horror

Not very. Its more atmospheric/depressing

EW had a decent story but it couldnt decide on a tone on what to be.

>Afraid of Monsters
Cry of Fear is an enjoyable horror too. The "loading door" got me real good. But the story is extremely cliche. Head it has a fun coop campaign.

Talking about Half-Life mods, House sections of Underhell were real spooky. Chapter one is my personal GOTY 2013, it's fucking great.

Dead Secret is an amazing horror vr experience. Get a GearVr the game is like 10 dollars, but it is great.

Fucking hell, moot, fix the spoilers.

It's more psychological, the game loves to fuck with you and put you in situations and areas where you don't want to be

>Cry of Fear is an enjoyable horror too. The "loading door" got me real good. But the story is extremely cliche. Head it has a fun coop campaign.
Played it on LAN with a brother, was pretty funny, but it was pretty unstable. That was back then, maybe it's more stable now.

That's what true horror should be imo. That's what made the beginning of RE7 with Jack Baker so great, as well as Marguerite's section.

Best Project Zero game. Have fun with it.

I played some parts of it when I was sick, and man, they really got to me. The first rotating dolls puzzle scared me shitless, since you had limited tries and I was terrified of that one-hit kill ghost.

RE7 VR

P.T is the only good and true horror ever made.

Seriously, someone tell me what's better, I'd love to play it.

Amazing use of color and light especially for a PS2 game. I just finished it and was really underwhelmed by the "horror" in the game, the atmosphere is tense as fuck all throughout the game and kinda ruined it. But it did have some 10/10 moments like the ghost house and that one room with the large mirror.

That sounds scary as shit. I just encountered the hanged girl and boy did I fuck off

Get your cultist robes ready.

TEW is great, you gigantic faggot

ctrl+s, friend

It's fucking alien. How else are you going to make a horror game out of it? Besides with the flamethrower, and all the various ways it allows you to distractor impede it, you're hardly defenseless.

Try it. quotes spoiler quotes. You see it in my picture.

I agree with RE7 but that game style works really well with Alien, the Alien universe is really a perfect fit for that style of horror game.

Yeah I think a horror game needs to know when to ease up on the tension a little bit or the played just gets burned out on it.

They are probably the best types of games that will immerse the player. Certain games that aren't horror but have horror elements or tone are also often very immersive imo.

The genre's biggest strength is Immersion.

underrated post

Which is best? The original or the Wii remake?

Has some good scares but mostly it's just tense and remarkably depressive, it's probably the heaviest atmosphere out of any game I've played.

No idea, playedo nly PS2 version.

What are you talking about? I have the silent hill 2 game here for pc, using windows 7 64 bit and it's working perfectly. Just look up the pcgaminwiki site, there are a few fan patches that can help you if you're having trouble.

"i don't really believe you but here goes"

One thing you should do is disable antialiasing if you are playing with the grain filter effect. It messes up the fog. But other than this the fog is exactly as it is in the ps2 version

well damn, I was the fool all along. sorry about that.

But P.T. is basically Sillent Hills with some twists and hidden puzzles that makes no sense.
