Time to discuss this game, its sequels, and its spiritual successors.

I got memed into buying the second game. I can't finish it, it's way too dated and boring.
Should have gotten Prey (2017).
the remake is going to be shit isnt it?
>SS2
>Dated and boring
I know you're baiting, but you could use better shit.
Probably.

Just got to level 2 on the Citadel, it's a fun game.
I picked up the magnum on level 1 too.
*Blocks your path*
>tfw poorfag all my life
>now you can easily buy a ps4 or get a decent PC and play modern games, but missed so many old jewels that can't seem to enjoy because you're used to modern graphics.
And not playing on the original hardware feels bad too.
Fucking hell.
SS1 is so fsking good
I've finished SS2 about 5-6 times, is SS1 worth playing? I had a lot of trouble getting into SS2 the first time until I got far enough to get on a roll.
The combat is terrible.
SS1 is the best shock game
Once you get use to the controls it's smooth sailing from there. Yes, it's worth a play.
yes, its better in some ways even, worse in others
GoG version the best I assume? Though I guess LG studios is dead so I should just pirate
Did they cancel this show?
Yeah it has the Enhanced Edition with custom res and wasd controls
Get a soundfont for the game, the midi music is pretty shitty.
youtube.com
yes i'm shilling my own video please don't hurt me
They cancelled Gen Z
The game was bought by NightDive which are making the System Shock remake. I wouldn't recommend pirating it because they've done very stellar work with older titles on PC like Turok and System Shock 2.
Yeah, the GOG version (Enhanced Edition) has mouse look which really breaths new life into the game.
Also, NightDive Studios bought the rights to System Shock. You should buy it to support them. They're a great company. They're buying up old games and remastering them. They did that with Turok too.
Oh OK. Good shit. Thanks friends. I'll pick it up next time it's on sale.
you're terrible
>falling for the 'dated' meme
>taking a fan's mod, putting your own logo on it and demanding money for it is now considered 'very stellar work'
I bet you're thankful for GOG's dosbox wrappers, too
I don't use GOG actually.
who wore it better?
I'm playing the second game for the first time because reasons.
Dumped all my weapon points into lasers, did I goof? The rapier's pretty aight, the pistol's decent and I just picked up an emp rifle though level 6 requirements is fucking astronomically expensive.
emp is kinda crappy, only works on bots
You'll be fine, there's more than enough CM eventually. You may want to branch into another weapon type, or maybe PSI. EMP isn't worth it.
Try to avoid spoilers and further tips though. The game should be beatable with almost any build as long as you're not an idiot.
you can beat the game by using pretty much anything, as long as your good or patient enough.
Citadel
SCAWK
Honestly? A hard choice.
PREY was stellar and the station design was toptier.
System Shock goes for a more Cyberpunk feel, so I'm going to say SS1. PREY beats S2 though.
Mp3 upload when?
the soundtrack being shit doesn't mean the game is. if the entire game is anything like their tiny demo they put out, it should be fan-fucking-tastic.
most of the advice I've heard is that if you don't put points in the right skills then you can hit a wall and get stuck, but I'm starting to suspect that's because those people were scrubs.
is exotic any good? the ice needle looks cool and I've been putting some points into research.
Exotic is useless. Don't bother with it.
t.polygon
I've played every Shock game (including Prey) EXCEPT for 1. I have the HD one or whatever on Steam, is it too old? I don't mind old a la Fallout / Deus Ex but TOO old I can't do.
>prey beats s2
obvious troll is obvious, ttlg absolutely hates prey 2017
The crystal shard is the best melee weapon in the game. People will tell you that all weapon types pale in comparison to standard, and they'll be right, but those people also hate fun.
>caps at 1366x768
has anyone managed to force it higher yet? always crashes whenever I try 1080 or up
fug. Don't give me cool alium weapons and then have them be shit.
I've heard people call the crystal shard a 'win button', but honestly I've tried it once and it was simply a slightly better wrench.
It's very hard to hit a wall, although there are absolutely better and worse ways to play the game. For example, psi invisibility is a literal win button even on the hardest difficulty while specialising in conventional guns can be pretty hard until you get the assault rifle.
Just don't go in expecting an older SS2. SS1 is more of an action-adventure game. There's no RPG elements and there's less emphasis on horror outside the early stages of the game.
I've got it to work 1080p. chugs alot of framerate though
The enhanced edition has improved controls, so you can play it properly now. Worth playing.
lmao
You're playing it wrong, its paced and relies on cover shooting and tactical breaches with some preparation with different ammo types and traps.
Polysexual really has no idea what they are doing.
>Shock game (including Prey)
First off no, it isn't too old and second
This.
Also may I add that SS remake is gonna be a catastrophe if they make it full-blown horror (which they almost certainly will based on the trailer), horror really doesn't work when almost all your enemies kill you from afar with guns, you need mostly melee enemies and up-close combat like in SS2.
user's axiom states that if you're worried a game is too old for you, then it is.
>TFW all these nades,mines n hardware
Why do they hate it? It's SS2, but better.
They don't, that user was bullshitting. GenGaming loves it.
Same people that remastered the Tyrol games for steam so it has some good hope to it
Too bad Prey is fucking fantastic.
For me Prey was an emulation of SS2, it had the heart, but it didn't have the soul. It felt boring and I didn't feel like there was a real risk in what I was doing. It was more like Bioshock than System Shock
*teleports behind you*
Heh. What makes you think a low level life form like you is worthy of touching me!
*unsheaths laser rapier*
Now face my ultimate move. DANCE OF A THOUSAND BLADES!
*stops time and cuts you at the speed of light*
Heh nothing personnel kid
Actually, you know, I'll concede that.
Mechanically, it does feel more like a BioShock. It's better than BioShock, but lacks the complexity for it to be a System Shock game, I think.
Prey would've been straight 10/10 if they increased to neuromods price threefold, or better yet, made them non-craftable. As it is, the game's economy is now all fucked up, because they're the best use of your resources and you can easily max your character around 70% through the game.
i haven't played it yet, these are just my impressions based on what other people are saying about it
What class is best for a first time play through of SS2 and is it true that you it becomes impossible to beat the game if you don't have a certain stat leveled high enough?
>soldier
>technically yes but you can use an item that's easy enough to stockpile to pass the skill check to beat the game
one of my favorite games of all time. I replay it like once a year. More games need to take lessons on how to do exploration-based gameplay from it.
Thanks, also are the controls in this game a bit more intuitive than the first one? I really enjoyed it but the controls never really felt natural to me.
yeah, standard WASD is fine and smooth for shock 2, jumping is still a bit wonky but eventually you get a feel for moving back and forth in the right rhythm to fight in melee without getting hit
It's because they try to play these games with controllers.
>tfw too poor to afford VR
>tfw too poor to afford a new GPU to play in VR
Will System Shock remake support VR? I can't imagine how great it would be to go through cyberspace.
>*blocks your path*
*scarfs u down*
mmm-mmm
Hitler was going after the wrong people.
>Throw it into beaker,
>Feed useless ammo into recycler.
Is Dead Space a spiritual successor?
Your memos are never good
iirc Dead Space started life at EA as SS3 until the redwoodshores guys got to make it original
Thank god. I like Dead Space but it would have been a shitty SS sequel.
you memo de nemo
hell no
thumbnail looked like two anime girls standing both sides of a human sized benis to me
Where do these threads even come from? Everyone knows the average age of Sup Forums in 2017 is 14, I highly doubt anyone here has played SS1, which came out before you were all born.
...
Prey wasn't better than BioShock, fuck off.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?
...
TTLG, the biggest system shock fans in the entire world, hate it. if the #1 rabid fans don't like your product, you've clearly fucked up. same thing with NMA shitting on all fallouts past 1 and 2.
i despised how SS2 turned into a shitty rpg with a shitty leveling system.
>TFW first encounter and no AP ammo/rapier
Maybe not in terms of art and creativity, but the game certainly played better and I missed an inventory something fierce.
I'd say, yeah it was better than bioshock.
...
>Shoot 4 shots of mag pulse and move on.
TTLG is not a single person, Prey is a first person RPG with shooting elements to it like System Shock was whereas BioShock was a first person shooter with RPG elements tacked onto it.
Arkane are really the only studio who have stuck with the same design ethos that Ion Storm and Looking Glass Studios adhered to, in fact many ex-Looking Glass staff work at Arkane.
it's better in every way except the controls.
>TTLG is not a single person
no, it's an entire forum full of people who think prey is a shitty cashgrab that randomly threw in system shock elements like a recycler without actually trying to make a system shock game at all, and it's obvious that Arkane has never played SS1 or SS2 in any capacity.
Gameplay was worse, upgrades were for the most part worse, inventory system was good.
Must go now Anonymongs.
>People who worked on SS1 and SS2 have never played it
>i've played every Shock game (including Prey) EXCEPT for the best one and only true Shock game.
I've seen SS1 discussed more in the past 3 or so years than I had in the decade before then
