NieR: Automata

I'm a bit out of the loop in regards to gaming, but I've heard much praise about this game.
Should I play it? I don't mind cinematics.

play drakengard 3, 1, Nier, then Nier automata
Get all the endings also btw it pays off

I own a PS2 so 1 is doable, but I pretty much stopped then so 3 is a no can do.

Don't listen to this fag

Automata is fine by itself and does cool things if you've played the first game

There's no way this picture cuts off there.

Listen to me and not this reddit spacing fag.
Its worth go buy a ps3 you miss a lot of cool shit if you haven't played the past games.

This is the only way OP.

Drakengard can be skipped if you're really not enjoying it but I would at least recommend you play the first NieR before Automata

>play 3 games before you play fun game
This is why ongoing series put me off. Shit I just want to have fun and be able to enjoy a story

this

Are Drakengard 1 and 2 fun?
I'll have to miss 3 and Nier since console exclusive.

No, Drakengard 1 is definitely not fun.
Never played 2 but people generally say to skip it.

>play fun game
Sorry you're not getting that with nier 2 then it literally only gets good three endings in

Do not bother with drakenguard

do bother with Nier, as automata builds on it a lot

enjoy

Shit hack and slash game with a "spam dodge and press x once" gameplay loop with a good soundtrack. 5/10 shit game, wait for it to be $20

fuck off

2 is not a part of the universe. 3 is really good.

Drakengard is most certainly not fun. I gave it a spin for I think four hours and I walked away feeling as if it had been four hundred.

In terms of gameplay the game is repetitive, but the story is so batshit it will make you say what the fuck aloud a few times.I think it's worth experiencing just to see what happens to the world and characters as the story progresses.

>miss a lot of cool shit if you haven't played the past games.
Name 5

>oh the story in nier automata is very good but you need to play 3 slightly related games, read the novellas, listen to the radio plays and watch the concert
>then you can truly grasp the DEPTH of yoko taro's vision

twins
emil
Kaine
Accord name drop
what the desert area use to be

I mean I wanna play it because I heard it's meta but I wonder how the fuck do you transition from medieval fantasy, magic and spellcasting to anime lolibots fighting post apocalyptic cutebots

This is why Automata was such a fucking failure for me
Theres zero reason to care about the characters

In the secret ending of Drakengard the main characters end up creating a portal to modern Tokyo and shit just kind of goes downhill from there for mankind

Those are all side things. The game is better for knowing them but it is not worse if you do not.

You have brain damage

Pretty easily. Remember that Weiss, Rubrum and Noir were all creations of future humanity, they weren't magic so much as science in a way that looks magic. And they'd already built androids in the past, makes sense they'd have plans to build more.

9S 2B and A2 were handled well did you even get route C

i don't know how you wouldn't cry about the melodrama and hardships of the millionth incarnation of 9s and 2b
i didn't even hate automata but if we are talking specifically about the plot of the game (and the game alone) it left a lot to be desired

Drakengard 1 is fun in a very specifically not fun way

TOOBIES ASSSS XD!

>I thought MGS2 was a masterpiece

You will adore automata. I'd also strongly recommend Nier 1.

Its pretty meh. The original Nier is a masterpiece. Also MGS2 is my favorite game for the record.

>>I thought MGS2 was a masterpiece
Yeah you'll love it

you'll enjoy Automata if you liked mgs2

There's some nice existentialism and some exploration on the futility of war. You just have to play all the way to ending E, or else you'll miss all the fun.

you should also try to play the original nier and killer7, if you haven't

>The original Nier is a masterpiece

One of my personal favourite games but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, you need to be able to overlook some very rough spots to appreciate that game

Be sincere to me
How much will i miss if i dont play DG3 and Nier before automata? I dont have a PS3.
I have a ps2 but still didnt play DG1

Gotchu on the latter senpai

>DoD3
nothing, I can't even remember if there's a single reference
>Nier
some remixed songs, several visual references, a plotline with a character from the original game, the purpose of two characters later on in the story. It's all still explained to you to the point that you can understand it, but some harder-hitting moments are based on you knowing what the reference is. Nonetheless you'll be able to follow the plot fine and get all the interesting unique stuff.

DoD3 almost nothing at all. As for Nier you will miss some side stuff but you will still be able to fully enjoy the game as it is. Taro made the game as something that can and does stand alone. It might be worth watching some of the videos on youtube that summarise Nier so you can have a little connection with the characters but it's not necessary.

I dont want to spoil Nier myself on youtube because i intent to play it eventually, either getting an old ps3 or through emulation in the distant future.
But in the mean time i dont want to let automata gather dust in my steam account for years.

But isn't the world of Nier built upon a secret ending of DoD?
>this triggers my OCD

>worth watching some of the videos on youtube that summarise Nier

Don't do this OP, if you like Automata you can play NieR afterwards. That game doesn't deserve to be experienced through Youtube videos

If you thought mgs2 was a masterpiece you're going to cream your shorts on nier automata

the events of DoD1's final ending lead to the very first scene in nier, then the next scene takes place 1300 years later. Automata takes place 13000 years after that.

It's all the same world, but very little similarities remain

pretty much this

>But isn't the world of Nier built upon a joke ending of DoD?
ftfy
And yes, ending E of the first Drakengard

>It might be worth watching some of the videos on youtube that summarise Nier
Don't do it OP,it's not worth

Here. All you need to know to understand the timeline.

Maybe I'm alone in this opinion but I don't think watching some videos about Nier detract from the experience of later playing it too much at all. Instead I would say the benefits gained in understanding for going into Automata outweigh it.

Ideally one would play Nier and then Automata, but if they are determined to play Automata first I don't think watching some summaries on Nier, playing Automata and then going back to play Nier is too bad a course of action.

Wait a sec, isn't DoD2 a sequel to DoD1's ending A?

No it's an alternate reality altogether. It only shares a few characters I think.

masterpiece =/= perfect

Huh, really need to get around to playing it one of these days even if the general consensus is it's "1 but without anything that made 1 interesting".

You might want to play NieR first, but you should play Automata at some point regardless. It has issues, but it is really excellent. One of my top 3 games this year alongside Yakuza 0 and Persona 5.

Nier has some aspects that I feel no video can adequately represent, but honestly its biggest twist is made useless by Automata's main plot, so it'd probably be best to get a quick review of the first game if only to know who Emil and what the Gestalts and Replicants are

I did not like the game really at all. The opening sequence was awesome and then it became a fucking snooze fest of running back and forth between a very boring hub with nothing happening. Traded it in for Wipeout.

No play NieR blind and watch the summary video afterwards. Playing any game after watching videos on it will always harm the experience

universityofcalifornia.edu/news/spoiler-alert-spoilers-make-you-enjoy-stories-more

OP just play nier automata. You could listen to the people telling you to play the previous games first but then you wouldn't play the game you originally wanted to play first and let's face it, how good are the chances that you want to play another yoko taro game after pumping through 4 games? And how long will it take you?
Nier Automata was my first yoko taro game and now it's easily in my top 3 and I don't regret not picking the other titles up first.

>you miss a lot of shit if you haven't played the past games
>so you should play them in release order of 4,1,3,5
nice fucking meme, anime poster. also way to miss telling newfriend OP about why he shouldn't play D2

They had magical tech stuff made from the dragon. It was science but the words for the grimoires really were magic.

>he thinks taro puts even that much thought into where the paranormal shit in his games "comes from"

Why it looks better than 1

>Someone who has only played Automata telling OP to ignore people who are dedicated fans to the series

Do you really think your opinion has any more merit than someone who has played the other games?

He said he played the others afterwards.

That's not explicitly stated

Can 2b fuck?

In a way yes because I was in the same position as him and no automata is not much better after you slog through the other games if you weren't interested in them in the first place.
I didn't play the other games yet but you can't expect a newcomer to act like a dedicated fan and play all other yoko taro games even if they are great
