style of design failing because no fucking toy looks like that.
yeah except in the handhelds the combat system was heavily based on the command deck while in kh3 it's heavily based on the keyblade transformations and the meelee combat.
In BBS and DDD you had 4 different animations for melee and nothing else, 4 keyblade swings and that was it.
In kh3 every transformation has its own moveset, meaning an unbelievable amount of animations, now include the base combat animations and how the system is more like kh2 with moveset modifiers which add even more animations and actions.
Adding a new character to this system is not at all comparable to the shitty handheld games. Those were cheap and easy to copy paste 90% of the movesets of one character to the other. Only the finish commands were unique to each character.
Except it was Pixar that was responsible for the design of Sora and friends in toy story world.

I think it's just a case of them not wanting to upend the combat for one world like they did for Atlantica or Pride Lands. They're just retextures of the base model. Which I'm personally fine with, those worlds were not especially fun.

We've already seen enough of the gameplay, it's fundamentally different to the handheld games and can't be copy pasted. Otherwise Aqua in KH0.2 would play exactly like KH3 Sora.

2. Nomura was decidedly hands-off with Days. The only other writers on it were Yukari Ishida and Tomoko Kanemaki. Tomoko Kanemaki has no other credit sand is only labeled as "scenario" for Days. Yukari Ishida, by contrast, has been a writer on KHII, tWEwY, and re:Coded alongside Days. Not to mention that she was the event planning DIRECTOR.
