They only take so long to render because they don't bother optimizing anything. Real time can use tricks and optimized effects to achieve similar results.

Most modern CGI that's being made nowadays is being made on physical GPU renderers, rather than dated CPU renderers.
They are essentially using very specialized rendering engines that can output pretty good framerates with high quality real time simulation and subdivision technology. These things are essentially video game engines that are likely very similar to UE4, except they're built to run on their massively powerful custom MAC/Unix systems.
Just to put that into perspective, when toy story was being made by pixar, the only previews available at high frame rates was wireframe previews, and they barely ran at 30fps

This is not true. Render farms are still using CPUs. Pixar's Renderman doesn't even support GPU rendering.
They do use GPU acceleration to preview scenes, though.

The main differences are the different driver set allowing some enterprise applications to run several times faster than with the consumer drivers and ECC memory in selected models. Some of the older Geforces could actually be softmodded to become "Quadros" which let you install the special drivers with the huge performance gains and everything.

not likely. Chances are we'd still be in a market of mass manufactured "variety" computers like the zx, MSX, c64, amiga, and the like. It was really the NES/famicom that shattered the home computer market and brought a standardized set of hardware to develop games for. No "unique" versions of computers, no premium or deluxe models, you bought an NES, you got an NES, it ran everything, no need for upgrades (well, the disk system but you know what I mean). europe still had that stuff into the late 80s and early nineties but those home computer entertainment devices were totally shut out of every other market by like 88. It's pretty fascinating to read up on the history of the NES in that regard actually.
