They had a winning formula with MvC3's pseudo cell shaded look with thick outlines. Why mess with it? Why make it look like a phone game?

Game played better than expected and it looks like many things can be done combo wise, but everything else we seen is garbage. May buy the Super Ultra Deluxe Edition down the line and see what changed.

That's what happens when a game is made solely by and for marketing. They can't write dialogue or a story that would make the cross-over make sense so they just make sure you know who each character is and what their "thing" is. That way you can recognize them when you encounter them outside of the crossover's universe.
