The name is dumb because the characters are the blandest looking shit imaginable.

i dont really care that they are just ripping off smash because they worked on project M but god damn those character designs are ugly as fuck.

i know this tends to get said a lot without any meaning to it but the characters literally look tumblr tier.

Get the fuck out of here, marketer. The game looks fucking horrible both graphic and gameplay wise.

I like Girl Marth. That's about it.

Hopefully cosmetics will fix the rest.

characters are dumb
then again, they're pretty much set up for failure because everybody will immediately compare their roster to smash, and a small indie fan project like this simply does not have the capacity to create a character roster that can even come close to the sheer quality of smash's roster, which is the product of 20 years of work from one of the industry's biggest corporations.

They might as well be called modders than experienced devs if this game is the result of their craft. Nintendo assets really made their experience shine, take that away and you just get a mediocre looking title. Bad first impressions overall.

The general theme of the game is the gems give them elemental power and thats my way of marking players (offline at least). Admittedly it does look like the sims crystals but these are supposed to be shaped differently.

They might have finished the core characters but they were trying add more characters to the roster.

Rivals of Aether looked better than this at the very least and the scene is pretty much dead. This game looks like ass, already getting negative feedback, and it's not even out yet.

Anything can sound good paper, hell this game did. Unless it has an art style, it won't get appeal which Icons failed to do.

People are never going to learn what pre-alpha means. Showing this so early was a mistake, but people wanted to see gameplay. When they see gameplay, they nitpick the graphics. There's no winning.

Criticism regarding the movesets/art designs themselves is valid, but people going MUH HIT SOUND EFFECTS need to go drown in a puddle.

These smash clones always look like crap because of the garbage animations and lack of polish. Say what you will about Sakurai, his games always feels good to play because he know how to make hits fill like hits. You'd expect people who have such technical knowledge of the game to rip those details off, rather than ripping off movesets.

What i don't understand is that here are even shitty stock sound effects that sound more violent than what they're using here. It's like they went out of there way to make it sound bland.

I tried mang, I even watched a lot of videos on fighting game animation specifically, its hard to do and not my profession.

The animations are slowly improving however, but for a preview into the process that has to go on to implement this shit.

Hit freeze is super important - when someone gets hit, the two characters involved get their animations frozen for a few seconds. That's normal for fighting games, but Smash goes beyond this by actually slightly shaking the characters. The harder the hit, the more violently they shake before getting pushed away. Camera shakes also need to be sudden, big and very quick, screen shaking is usually considered "instant polish", making a game look better with little effort. Then there are tons of tiny little special effects like dirt when dashing or jumping, electric bolts when you get hit, characters flashing white or red when they get hit, etc. And finally, the animations need to look good. There's a good reason fighting games are so hard to do, you really need top notch animators working on them.

I'm implemented all of these things in my game (well, the on-hit stuff), I just haven't posted proper gameplay recently. mainly because all my old friends suck dick at the game, and I don't want to post of a video of my just destroying my own AI.

All of the other smash clones failed and this looks worse than all of them. It will fail.

Based on the gameplay I've seen, I don't believe that statement is accurate at all. A game that was 20% finished would look much, much, MUCH rougher. If there is truth to it, it probably means that the game systems and graphical/sound work has been completed, and the remaining work is to add new characters, moves, and a story mode. The gameplay itself looks pretty close to final.

It's not comparable to what we're seeing from Icons, which is clearly a game engine that is still in progress at a basic level.

As a developer, DBZ is 90% done.

Animations look poor, to be honest. Every character looks like they're animated like Wario was in Brawl.

Terrordrome 2 is doing that with horror characters.
