I've been thinking, are 2d game inferior to 3d games?
Like the second you hear a game is 2d you think lesser of the game, that the developer was too poor to do 3d.
2d games feel like they come with an omen of inferiority, like the game wasn't good enough to be 3d.
You look at old 2d game and you say that they were fun but were they fun enough? Why play 2d when you can play 3d.
Id say contra is just as fun as Call of duty yet I feel Contra is inferior. Timewise I just could never see myself playing Contra for hundreds of hours, unlike COD.
The 2d metroid coming out feels like a step back, why be 2d when 3d. I know 2d can be fun , but can it be as fun as 3d?

2D is great, but what I do hate is 2D games with 3D graphics. Link Between Worlds looked so ugly compared to Minish Cap for example.

and I look at these games and say to myself, mechanicy they are at the same level as a flash game

2d and 3d are more like different genres than one being an evolution of the other. Animated and live action work the same way with the fact that it's about the quality of the content, not the presentation. Contra is a shoot em up which can be fun with its arcade style while cod is sim of army type shootouts which was good at first, but has devolved into reskined bs.

2d games are absolutely good enough. Take a series like Metroid. I think the 2d ones are still better than the prime games. Fighting games are another example. A lot of the best rpgs are 2d.

The premise of a game and the mechanics of a game are different You could make change the sprites in contra to be about two snakes spitting venom at enemy wombats who throw shit at you and it would still be contra. Splatoon is an arena shooter like quake is, but its not about soldiers shooting each other in an arena

You can't do many things effectively in 3D, such as merging platforming and combat seamlessly without ending up with a clunky mess, or using enemies as obstacles in general without severely limiting the level design. A lot of games from the NES era were simplistic mechanically, and derived most depth from things like level design. Once you master that, there's not much left to the games though. Contra suffers from this since it's an easy game, but there are games challenging enough to keep you occupied for dozens or hundreds of hours from level design alone. Mechanically complex 2D games exist too, Umihara Kawase for instance. Comparing CoD multiplayer to Contra is nonsense, the former is a single player game. You're sure as fuck not going to play CoD sp for hundreds of hours.

When 3D was new it was the "cool" thing to do and if your game was 2D it was deemed old hat by the normie gamers that had been on the rise over the course of the decade. This was reflected in the industry, which had a borderline embargo on 2D games for years (at least when it came to consoles).
