It has the same flaws as other RTS games - too boring and complex. As a result, no one actually played W3 for it's RTS gameplay and just played DOTA or other custom games instead.

This, actually. I played through the story a few times but I rarely played the actual RTS game online. Customs were just so much better.

I play regularely. I play on Battle.Net europe and I can still get a lot of games going.
I currently play Island of Frogs, Risk Devolution and Uther Party.

The community is very much alive, although you have to kinda filter through the bot-hosted games.
