Yeah I never understood why the first cast was the "hope" class when all they needed was small incentives to murder each other, but the "despair" class had to be forced into a life or death situation to even think of killing each other. DR1 would have the best cases and characters if it was written with the experience the team had in DR2 and DRV3. DR1 suffers from being the first game in the series, thus lacking the vision the writers later gained.

Addendum: I still like the majority of DR1's cast, but I feel like their backstories and personalities were underutilized. Also, no-one besides Aoi and Sakura noticeably hung out. Ishimaru and Mondo don't really count when they're buddies for the whole of two or so days.

Ever seen a movie that's so bad it's good? That's the basic charm of the main plot in any DR game, the plot being so bad it's funny. Add in actually good characters and fun, interesting murder cases and you get a pretty fun game.

It's handled well in my opinion, and the bonus mode for DRV3 takes place in the main dangan ronpa universe anyways so these characrers do also exist the way they are in an alternate universe.

DR1 has a better atmosphere since you're all in an enclosed space where as sdr2 is on an island so some of the tension is lost there. The cast being better/worse is entirely up to the player I feel

The events of DRV3 are real, it's just that it's also a reality show. Basically, the characters signed up for the reality show, got mindwiped and inserted with new personalities, and were put in a killing game broadcasted for the masses. Everything that happens in them is real.

DRV3 takes place in an alternate universe where Danganronpa is all fictional. It started as games (DR1, DR2) etc, eventually evolving into a reality show that has real people dying. They were fully aware of signing up to a murder show: hell, Saihara and Kaito sign up explicitly to kill people. There's no despair in the V3 world outside of the game: it's completely normal, just with a wacky killing game show.

I always saw Celeste as a puffed up chuuni, like a more intelligent Yasuhiro. Not actually as smart as she advertises herself, and it shows during the other trials.
Granted, the whole robot costume gambit was full retard and betraying Hifumi was horribly shortsighted; they might have actually gotten away with it if she had killed anyone else.

Oh, I like her character a lot and agree with the puffed up chuuni part, but she also shows actual signs of intelligence and unlike Yasuhiro, her talent can't exactly be faked. She's smart, but her murder is horribly executed.
