Honestly the moment i understood that you see the game title for the first time only on route B, i understood that he's the actual MC and he didn't disappoint. He's the best Automata character and of all Taro rides he had some of the wildest.

He also has a great chemistry with 2B even if she tries her hardest to appear emotionless and aloof. When shit goes down both of them always try their hardest to protect each other, completely dropping their usual demeanour. I think the game perfectly captured the mood of two of them being alone in a weird and hostile world. They are like rays of light for each other and i'm happy that they got a chance to live in a peaceful world.

He is presented as somewhat annoying (and 2B as unnecessarily distant) in Route A.
You see that he's actually very capable and puts in a good share of the effort in Route B.
In Route CD, he's fighting despite knowing the truth, being infected with a logic virus, and wanting to lash out at all of the bullshit that made him suffer his greatest losses.
And with all of the other supplemental information and Intel, 9S is very endearing.

His fighting style is limited only if you perceive him as having lost heavy attacks. Where 2B's Light Hold attack is usually some kind of weak dash, 9S's Light Holds are very powerful stingers (spear, fists) or mid range shredders (swords). With a Shockwave Chip giving him greater range, and when you incorporate weapon switching, 9S is just as versatile as 2B.
Add on the hacking (both as an in-combat thing to nuke a cluster of enemies and a sort of stealth preemptive attack on one enemy to Subjugate them) and I found him more fun and powerful than 2B.

Only thing I would have liked to have was the ability to equip three weapon sets, so I could have a Spear, Small Sword and Long Sword at the ready for 9S.

Jesus Christ I hated going back to 2B or A2 after having the hacking shit with 9S. Honestly, the gameplay never really clicked with me enjoyment-wise. It was servicable and not really a hinder in any way, but for some reason I never really enjoyed it like I would Bayonetta, DMC or MGR. Can't stop listening to some of the songs from the OST after finishing though, that shit was top-notch, especially Weight of the World.

I'd say he greatly beats her in versatility aspect simply because he deals a fuckload of damage at any range and has access to stun/dot ability.
Fighting drill worms with girls is annoying as shit, with him it's a single spear toss or hack.

Honestly, spear toss became my primary method of attacking since it does really good damage without the necessity of getting close. Add to that with the Spear of the Usurper at lvl 3 or 4, whichever gives the second ability, you can occasionally insta-kill enemies by making them fight for you and detonating them or just have them rampage.

Only problem is that so much of C&D would have hit harder if the side stories were in game.

Like if instead of those cardboard play cutscenes for the bosses we'd have more little flashbacks to say, memory cage.

Imagine a hacking sequence that drops you into an arena with 2B before you really understand everything.

Spear of the usurper may as well be his canon weapon, it suits his playstyle immensely, as well as Demon's Cry because its unique ability coupled with his insane ranged ora ora move explodes an entire encounter with a single throw.

That shit was just too good in pretty much any situation with the exception of bossfights or the Colosseum rounds where it didn't work on certain enemies. They had a change of heart thanks to him. Given that A2 destroys the Ark by swapping herself with 9S, he arguably could destroy it too, yet he re-evaluated his life at last moment too.
That ending is beautiful because representatives of both machines and androids managed to stop the violence while being one step away from destroying everything.

I think the reason he didn't destroy the Ark had more to do with the fact that A2's sword was pierced through his stomach and the logic virus had corrupted his mind thus he was literally ten seconds away from death.

I think that he was simply shocked to see his enemy just approaching him like that and showing him that they changed and have no desire to destroy androids anymore.
At least the scene with Adam deeply moved 9S and made him question his life.
