The implementation of laws was terrible since most boss units were exempt from them and generic units would never break them.

Doned is also a dickhead considering he puts out the hit on Marche before even talking to him about it.

Yeah but there's no way you can know that stuff beforehand unless you read a guide. Sometimes you can make a decent guess from the mission description but most of the time you're going in completely blind so you'll just be focusing on getting laws that don't cripple you.

Marche also had a lot to gain from staying in Ivalice considering how strong his clan was but he still went back home just to take care of his cripple brother that tried to kill him multiple times.

In terms of being a raw dickhead in a JRPG the only protagonists I can think of who are worse are the evil route MC in Soul Nomad, the demon lord path in Dark Half, and most people from Drakengard.

That's the point. He's spent his life missing out to take care of Doned, and Ivalice means that in a blink of an eye that's all been meaningless. As long as Doned is suffering as a paraplegic he can justify all the years he's missed out for him, but without it it's all for naught.
