For a handheld, I'd say it absolutely is.

I can really only take one handheld with me on a flight or something. In a pre-Switch world, 3DS won out almost every time.

3DS lacks both in terms of quantity of good games and innovation - 80% of the games worth playing on the system are ports or rehashes.

I think the ds is better than 3ds for gba + ds games vs ds + 3ds games but that's just me.

In terms of it's own library, it's admittedly lacking. But it has a good variety of Monster Hunter clones, dungeon crawls, Ys:Celceta, and shit like Gravity Rush & Tearaway (which got ported to PS4, but still).

Hacked 3DS is pretty good, too. Worse emulation capability overall, but you can emulate most things, and play DS games from a flashcart. The 3DS's library is loaded with ports too (something people tend to ignore when pointing out the Vita's reliance on ports), but it has quite a few more original titles than the Vita.

If you like the original form factor, it's definitely worth it. Otherwise, realistically, finding an AGS101 SP or getting a DS Lite will be a better option for most people. Get some Eneloops or w/e too for rechargeable batteries.

No backlight, so many games are just ports or "enhanced" ports of older games, many games have bright washed out colors to make them more visible due to no backlight, the e-Reader was aborted too quickly resulting in games like SMB3 having incomplete content, every hardware revision lacked compatible interfaces for accessories that were already on the market, the GBA's 3D capabilities were largely never taken advantage of outside of shitty racing games, and Nintendo carried on with its retarded censorship policies despite M-rated titles appearing on both N64 and GC.
