phantasy star 4 immediately comes to mind

Stop posting kikes and maybe I'll name ONE.

Valkyria Chronicles

Since we're all here: What's the DS game called where you play as a bunch of different classes?
Some classes are homey, like Cook, Carpenter, w/e.

Dark Souls is not an JRPG, faggot.

It sure as hell isn't a WRPG.

Ragnarok DS?

Chrono Trigger
Suikoden 2
Legend of Dragoon

>It's made by japanese
>It's an RPG
it's a Japanese Role-Playing Game

Mario & Luigi
Etrian Odyssey

Mother 1
Earthbound
Mother 3

If west makes final fantasy clone its jrpg or not? If japan makes any game with rpg elements its jrpg automatically?

Pokemon HGSS

>if it doesn't fall into my arbitrary unmeasurable non-defined category that I can change on a whim it's not a JRPG

>If west makes final fantasy clone its jrpg or not?
It's not.
> If japan makes any game with rpg elements its jrpg automatically?
Depends on how heavy the RPG elements are. But yes.

That's not the one.
I think you can change classes freely.

It's a genre, it doesn't tell where the game is made
Could as well be called Japanese-style rpg

Xenoblade Chronicles
Radiant Historia
Skies of Arcadia
Golden Sun

Shadow Hearts 2
Chrono Cross
Lunar
Xenogears
Legend Of Dragoon
Tales of xxxxx

i'm pretty sure jrpg always stood for rpgs that were japanese and not to define a sub-genre of rpg. not to mention a ton of the jrpgs mentioned in this thread are all so different in style, gameplay etc that you'd have to classify them as non-jrpgs even though they are

Etrian Odyssey
Bravely Default
TWEWY
Kingdom Hearts II
Pokemon HG/SS, Pt, and BW2

>If an american makes french coffe it's not french coffe anymore
Maybe, just MAYBE you're missing why the term "JRPG" was coined to begin with.

Lufia 2

Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song
Metal Max 2 Reloaded

JRPG is a genre.
>But this game was made by the Japanese
Doesn't matter
>But this game wasn't made by the Japanese
Doesn't matter
A Swiss Army Knife is a Swiss Army Knife no matter which country manufactured it

Nigger, even Wikipedia says it in the very first sentence:
>Japanese role-playing games are role-playing games made in Japan.

If you wanted a JRPG recomendation thread you only had to ask OP.
Pretty much every post so far has been solid gold.

valkyria chronicle

DeS, Bloodborne, DaS3. One of the few relevant games Japan has made.

Undertale

>even Wikipedia

VIDEOGAMES ARE NOT A DRINK OR A TOOL

Yeah maybe in the 90s
But today it means that an rpg has classic Japanese canons, like anime-style, turn-based combat more or less ecc.
Dark souls has western-like atmosphere and if you try to play it without know anything about who made it you could say it's a western game.

He's right though, it's a perfect example

>DaS3
kys

Oh, sorry, I forgot a NEET knows better than actual moderated pages information.

Wikipedia is wrong again, surprise surprise

But they share naming conventions

Digital devil saga
>inb4 it's smt

No. In Japan it's Digital Devil Saga アバタール・チューナー Dejitaru Debiru Sāga Abatāru Chūnā. There is no Shin megami tensei there. That was put for marketing purposes in America because Americans can't bother to look for easy to get info.

Difference between Sup Forums and Sup Forums: Sup Forums would easily know this is a thinly veiled recommandation thread. OP is trying to find new games to play.

>If an American makes french coffee it's not french coffee anymore
Depends on how much they messed with the recipe. If a western dev makes a 1-1 copy of FF7 then sure, it would be a jrpg, because it's identical to this Japanese thing. However western devs don't ever completely copy Japanese games so they are not jrpgs.

Also as I understand it, it was a leftover term from Japanese P&P roleplaying games which main distinction was it being made in Japan.

I like ask this question to people who want to refer to jrpg's not from their country or origin but from their gameplay, what gameplay makes a jrpg a jrpg? Because it so vague it's a useless word, whereas if it means country of origin is at least somewhat helpful.

It sounds like you're mixing up the categories "Anime" and "Turn-based" with the category "Japanese"

.One thing is not the other thing.

Not an argument

But games like dark souls aren't in that list

Sup Forums knows that as well, you retard.

Xenogears/Saga/Blade
Ar Tonelico/ Surge
Shadow Hearts

You're in my list, kiddo

LOTR the Third Age
Anachronox
Septerra Core
Undertale

Can't trick me, OP.

There are no good JRPGs.

Not saying it's always like this but almost a few of those styles is in them
Of course there are mixes, like in every other genres

>he thinks everyone is arguing with him
lmao autist

The real difference is no one on Sup Forums is enough of a faggot to care

Fantasy Life

Kek

The real difference is that on Sup Forums we aren't elitist faggots that think we're above recommendation threads or "spoonfeeding". Because our board is actually fun and not autismo-zone.
And I say this as someone who frequently shitposts in both.

>no Nier ITT
Is it not considered RPG ? Isn't it Japanese ? What's the deal ? I am enjoying it quite a lot at the moment.

>whereas if it means country of origin is at least somewhat helpful
No, it isn't. Saying "it's kind of like a JRPG" tells me a lot about the game already.

Shining Force
Xenogears
Skies of Arcadia
Nier Automata

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
Checkmate nigger

Thanks man!
I'd reward you with my favourite doujin, but I'm at work.

any reason to split games by country of origin and not by gameplay? Jrpg is something like ff, rpg is something like diablo

>Sup Forums
>fun
Nigga what
And elitism is good newfag,it makes people lurk more instead of shitposting to death

I'm guessing too niche. It's also pretty much the only one in the series that fits, even if you include the drakengard games

Chrono Trigger

Oh shut the fuck up sperg. It's megaten. So is Persona, so are the GB games, so on and so forth.

Mother3 earthbound is typical jrpg with turn based combat made in japan.
Undertale and lisa is has same gamplay but made by west = not jrpg?
Will you use country of origin or gameplay to better describe any game?

It doesn't for me. If someone told me Wasteland is a bit like a jrpg I would get a very different idea into my head than what it actually is.

>any reason to split games by country of origin and not by gameplay?
Cause it's a definable trait unlike "something like final fantasy". Are Tales or Ys not jrpgs then? Meanwhile is the aforementioned Wasteland a jrpg? Because it's reasonably similar to the older FF games.
> rpg is something like diablo
So Daggerfall, of Might and Magic, or Ultima is not an rpg?

Dragon Slayer/Xanadu

Why there is no other "J" types? Like jaction, jrts, jnovel jplatformer?

You want to describe someone a game, your first words are "its jrpg", first thing they will think of is ff. Turns out its dark souls clone with diablo loot system.

There kinda are but they didn't really stick cause they sound so silly.
When someone says "it's a Japanese Action game" they are basically saying it's a jaction game after all. But I think also because rgs's are a lot more dependent on cultural mechanics and writing than other genres so it became a bigger point of discussion.

Mind I'm not claiming that to a lot, if not most, people jrpg is a undefined genre rather than a place of origin, I'm just making a case for the fact that it makes more sense for the latter since it's so hard to define what a jrpg is from a gameplay standpoint. The same could be said for the world "rpg" in general.

And that doesn't serve anyone all that well is my point. Again, if someone told me Ys is like Final Fantasy I would never have played it and loved the shit out it because I find FF to be boring as fuck.

Grandia 2

Just because it does not fit your autistic arbitrary rules you made up, doesn't exclude it from the reality of what it really is.

JRPG isn't a genre you fucking dingus. It simply refers to roleplaying games made in Japan.
There is no such thing as a Japanese-style RPG. ARPGs made in Japan are JRPGs Turnbased RPGs made in Japan are JRPGs

People always like to say that ARPGs can't be JRPGs despite Japan inventing ARPGs in the early 80s, and Japanese ARPGs predate Japanese turnbased RPGs.

Also Dark Souls shares more in common with Japanese action RPGs, and even just Japanese action games in general than it does with Western games.

>listed as an RPG on From's website
>made in Japan
It's okay to be wrong, user-san

JRPG is not a genre. The stereotypical JRPG is a Turn based RPG.

Weebcuck

The last story.

>sees the trees instead of the forest.

Great post nitpicking why everyone is wrong. Here is the reality, JRPG does have a common accepted meaning.

In the west a JRPG is is a final fantasy styled, turn-based, game with shallow characters and a grandiose plot that is reveals the 2deep4u truth of human nature in your final boss battle against some god-like entity hell bent on punishing humanity. Basically Persona 5.

Lost Odyssey

If you don't play Chrono Trigger I will go to your house and beat you up.

Parasite Eve
Breath of Fire
Legend of Dragoon
Shadow Hearts
Lunar
Grandia
Suikoden

ttyd

No. Your headcanon isn't real.

Hahahahah jokes on you weebs I'm adding all these games to my backlog.

legend of fucking legaia

Not him but I agree with his headcanon. JRPG is a genre.
