I'm not a PC gamer and honestly, the only good mulitplayer games that are popular these days are on PC or exclusive to PC. Doesn't help that the popular MP games on console are riddled with microtransactions. It's why I stopped playing GTA V.

Paid online subscriptions are getting pretty rare for MMOs aswell. Only WoW and XIV are still doing it while the rest are without the fee.

I've never paid online and I have a PS4. Unfortunately the sheer amount of defected Xbots on the console combined with the general idiots makes sure paid online is here to stay.

I'm a Switch owner too and the console can barely pick up wi-fi signals. I've played games in the same room with no problems, but the Switch can't pick up anything unless I go right near the router.

I own a Switch and have zero intention of paying even $1 for their online "service". Nintendo needs a fucking wakeup call if they think they've earned the right to charge for an online infrastructure that looks stuck in the year 2000.

P2P on consoles isn't really peer to peer. You still have to connect to a dedicated master matchmaking server. Also necessary for statistics, leaderboards etc. companies have to host them somewhere i.e. they still have to invest money and once they are turned off the party is over.

While it has some advantages, P2P is worse in many aspects than dedicated hosting.

Not even games that provide serverfiles work without the publishers "master" servers for accounts/logins.
This is why many muliplayer games died when gamespy went down, even though you could host your own gameserver. For Battlefield 2 and 2142 the community came up with their own master servers so that these games still work even after gamespy disappeared.

They brought a ton of fun games to the industry. I'm still waiting for a game that is as fun as breakdown, grabbed by the ghoulies, lost oddesy and sudeki. Besides xbox live has always been better than that shitty psn and you get your money's worth out of it.

The costs for running a dedicated matchmaking server is next to nothing for any dev that can afford to sell retail games. In fact, it places so far down on the list of costs that it's barely visible at all.

Remember, even indie devs can afford a dedicated matchmaking server. You can rent one for cheap. It does by no means justify the presence of a $50 yearly fee for potentially millions of people. Sony has already gone and said they're making their biggest bucks on PS Plus. This is 99% bonus money to them.

Server costs are so low they dont even get listed on their own, they are grouped together under 'other costs', thats how much server maintenance costs. Its greed, pure and simple. They do it because they can do it. Thats why they do fullprice addons and an ingame cashshop.
